sad but catchy folk songs. this track was many people's introduction to him/them: "Skinny Love". Here's a good one off their new album: "Calgary"

They only have two full length albums that are both under 40 minutes, so you could easily check out the vast majority of their discography if you are so inclined.

Other than the two Leauxgen linked a few other standout tracks are For Emma, Re: Stacks, and Holocene.

My top ten:

1 Middle Brother - S/T
2 Adele - 21 (screw you, its a great album)
3 Deer Tick - Divine Providence
4 Crooked Fingers - Breaks in the Armor
5 Cage the Elephant - Thank You Happy Birthday
6 Paul Simon - So Beautiful So What?
7 Yuck - S/T
8 Wild Flag - S/T
9 Seryn - This Is Where We Are
10 Black Keys - El Camino

* David Mayfield Parade's debut would've made the top ten if it wasn't just 25 minutes long. At the end, it feels like a tease. I'll call it the best EP, with Surfer Blood.

Unrelated but I think a lot of you would enjoy it.

On Pitchfork right now there is an eight part documentary on the making of The Soft Bulletin. Interviews with all of the members of the Flaming Lips and the producer/engineer. Really interesting stuff.

I love the Black Keys, but find their popular success to be utterly baffling. We're talking about two guys, a guitarist and a drummer, with extremely low production values punping out electric blues jams that are unapologetically sloppy and sludgy. Then, suddenly, they are recording with DangerMouse and winning Grammys.

If you had lined up all the indie rock bands five years ago and asked me to pick which one would become a mainstream success - the white boy blues band from Akron would've ranked just behind the musical collective out of Montreal (Arcade Fire).

This.

I love them. Put out consistently great stuff, have crafted their own unique sound now (of which Brothers is the better representation), and are making waves enough for people to take notice without going into super stardom.

They are just plain good at what they do.

Not that we are done with this thread:

But what are we looking at for 2012? I just can't help but shake the feeling that 2010 was just monumentally great, maybe the best year of music in a loonngg time, and this year never had the chance to stack up well.

2012 Does get a Dr. Dog release....

The Shins, Lambchop, No Age, Sleigh Bells, Damien Jurado, Andrew Bird, The Fresh & Onlys, and The xx all have new releases I'll be looking forward to. Thats all I know of though.
