I killed my first buck with a 30-30 marlin. Dropped it in it's tracks at 75 yards.

On Christmas eve, I hit one in the same distance with a flat tip 170 grain. Found hair , blood , and a split in half of a 2" piece of rib on the ground. He got up and ran just before it got dark. I walked to the area and waited about 20 minutes and started to look for him. Found blood trails and started chasing. We Searched the whole area for two hours and did not find.

Must have just been one of those freak things. A 30-30 is a very accomplished deer rifle at 150 and in. I have seen many deer killed with a 30-30 using just the regular flat tip just like you said. You could have hit the ribs and not hit any vitals depending on the angle and such. My dad grew up on a 30-30 and always used 150 grain as well as all the other folks I know who shoot one do.

Uhhh, yea. If you hit it where you're supposed to. Just like a .300 short mag will, if you hit it where you're supposed to.
My .30-30 has 5 notches in it and I've had it for 4 years. Only one of them went anywhere, and it didn't go far at all.
ETA: And there's a good chance what you found wasn't a piece of rib. Could have been leg...

134 yards - 10 point, 30-30. in full view he collapsed straight down without one kick... "dead as a doornail". waited up in my tree 20 minutes watching him the entire time.........at 20 min I saw his tail switch, 2 min later his ears, 5 min later he was standing straight up. Shot him again and got my trophy. Point being - if you can see the deer laid out, wait at least 20-25 min before getting down, if I would have gotten down when i "wanted to", I would have scared him and probably never found him.

My first deer ever was a 10 point. I was 16 yrs old and it was Christmas Eve.I will probably hunt the rest of my life and never kill another deer that compares to it. Killed it with a 30-30 Marlin at just short of 100 yards. Maybe it was luck, but I like to think that my father made me spend enough time shooting at targets to have made a well placed shot.

That bullet extends the effective range of the .30-30 beyond 200 yards.

I'm with Downshift. I'd bet that was leg.

Yes it will. Uou could've missed the deer when looking for it (they hide when dying) or it could've went further than you expect. I blasted one with a 7mm Mag last year and took his lungs out. The blood trail looked like someone dumped a bucket of paint out, but he still went over 200 yards.

The doe I killed on Sunday was dusted at 125 with the exact round...she went all of about 10 feet

Following the blood trail, it had what it looked like pieces of Diaphragm and Lung with little pieces of bone dipping on the ground for a long ways. About maybe 130 yards, we lost the blood trail and searched all over the area for the deer and blood for another 100 yards. It was three of us searching and never found the critter.
I didn't have a scope on the gun and I aimed right behind the shoulder with it being slightly 1/16 inch up from the intended target.. I slowly pressed the trigger and should have nailed the spot If I did hit the leg that means the bullet failed. I was angry at myself
I placed the scope back on and changed to Leverevolution points. I am hoping this doesn't happen again.
Edited: I possibly messed up when I didn't stay in the stand. I wasn't sure I made a hit so I immediately went to the spot then after I found the blood and hair I waited about 20 minutes.

Of course. My grandpa hunted with a 66 (now mine). He swore by shooting the spine. I drop em with vital organ shots. Might bust a backbone for grandpa next year
