Now go compare Marino's YPG passing to League Average that year. Then compare Brees' YPG passing to this year's League Average. Therin lies your answer, Grasshopper.

we played 11 of the 16 games in a domed environment. Marino had to deal with weather conditions on most of his games. Precipitation, Snow, Humidity, Heat, Cold, Wind, More Wind, Gusty Wind.

I think the biggest factor to increased QB numbers is the technology at hand. The way QBs can study film nowadays in HD from multiple angles and have every play from the last 10 years right at their fingertips. Also the evolution of the spread offense, things are so much more advanced nowadays. But if you don't have the work ethic of a brees, you can throw all this out the window.

defenders were allowed to jam receivers a lot more and qbs got mugged after every pass. today's game is much more qb and wr friendly. not to take away anything that brees has done. but what fouts and marino did in that era of the game is greater than what any qb can do today.

if the new rules made it so much easier for QB's & WR's why did it take 27 years to break that record?.... It's one hell of an accomplishment no matter what decade you played in(this answer)

Rules changes don't account for all of it. In 84, offenses were built differently. More deep passing, especially. Yes, the rules have changed things slightly in the last 27 years, but it is not as drastic as the talking heads want to make you think.
Oh, and one more thing, when you compare Marino's record season to the average QB in 1984 and do the same with Drew vs the average QB this year, you'll find that Drew's delta is higher than Marino's, both in absolute and in relative measurements. That should silence the bullshite trying to downplay the significance of this acheivement.
Excellent post! I would also add that defenses are more sophisticated in today's game than they were in 1984 and defenders are bigger, quicker and faster ... the speed at which Drew Brees processes information is nothing short of amazing and anyone who sells this record short doesn't fully comprehend today's NFL game.

I hear this all the time and it's simply not true, or at the very least, greatly overblown. The five yard chuck rule was in effect in 1984 and was called frequently back then. In the 60's and early 70's I would agree but not 1984.
Plus, Drew Brees broke the record in 15 games which should more than compensate for any perceived advantage.

It is definitely easier today to get more passing yards but look at when the passing yard record was broken. 80, 81, 82, 84. 4 times in 5 years so i don't see how anyone can say that passing yards were especially hard to come by during that era.

You have to realize tha in 84 most teams built to stop the run. Today every builds to try an stop the pass, nickel is the base formation for most teams today. I think that offsets any rule changes.
