Why were all the pundits so critical of Tebow earlier in the season?

He looks like a mid level NFL QB to me. Put Orton or Boller as his last name and he is one of those guys who will win some games for you and then not set the world on fire in other games.

He played decent today. He made mistakes, but overall, he looks pretty good to me. And, I am not talking about the leadership or intangibles here. I am talking about how he throws the ball and plays the QB position.

What is the big problem? Why is it such a miracle that he has been winning?

because his passing looked worse than what you'd expect out of an elite high school quarterback or a good college QB

he was missing people who were wide open

I'm curious to see some of the highlights of his throws today. If he was 11 of 22 with normal difficulty throws then that is actually dramatic improvement from where he was earlier this year. If it ends up being mostly throws that were gimmes or dink and dunks then that is obviously less meaningful

Pundits and other NFL players don't like Tebow because they feel like he gets way too much undeserved hype. It has nothing to do with his religion or his attitude or even his playing ability. It's similar to how SEC fans feel about Ohio State or Michigan or Oklahoma or any other team that they feel gets undeserved attention and respect from the media.

Yeah, um, no.

He plays QB better than over half the QBs in the NFL. Have you seen some of the journeyman garbage out there? It is terrible.

There are only like 8-10 really good QBs in the NFL. Tebow is not in that group, but few are. I don't hear the media banging on Blake Gabbert who completed 14 passes for 141 yards, a TD and an INT in a 41-14 loss to the Falcons this week. You see those stats constantly.

Tebow is definitely outperforming guys like that.

He got the same amount of hype that any Heisman trophy winning, 1st round draft choice has gotten. Honestly, the HYPE that Tebow has gotten has been directly related to how much the pundits and other NFL players have hated on him and said how bad he was. Now, everytime he completes a forward pass, people put it in the miracle category.

Tebow is an average QB, which is not bad for a second year guy. It is the Merrill Hoge's of the world who have made him into a celebrity, in my opinion.

Bull shite. If Pre-dog killer Vick would've put up Tebow's numbers today, pundits would've blamed the loss on the fumble by Ball and muffed punt. He ran for 12-93-2 and had damn near 200 passing. That is better than most games "The most dangerous player in the NFL" had back in the day.

Yeah, I called him "Blake."

But, why do they care so much about Tebow to have been running him down the way they were. Sure, NOW he is a big deal. But, if it had not been for his critics when he first came into the NFL, I would venture to say that he wouldn't be as big a deal now as he is.

His leadership intangibles are off the charts, obviously. That will make up for his average QB play.

But, I would put forward that Tebow's critics have made him into a celebrity.

Yeah, um, yeah. Watch the first few games he started. Majority of his balls were at his WR's ankles. His throwing has improved a ton over the last month.

Because there wasn't an outcry from the fans wanting him to start over a veteran who had been fairly good. Gabbert doesn't have the same hype or following as Tebow does either.

I never saw Orton or Boller run backwards 29 yards for a loss.

Exactly. Vick had a better deep ball, but the stats ended up being the same for the most part.

Tebow will have to get much better to win championships, but he isn't a horrible QB. I know horrible QBs. I was a Saints fan during the "Billy Joe's" era.

Seriously? You are going to hold that against him? He was down by a couple of scores and was trying to make a play. I also never saw Boller or Orton spin away from a sure sack and run for almost 40 either. He is a playmaker and sometimes he should just eat the ball. He'll learn.

Bad example IMO, if anyone ever mentions Gabbert it is to say he looks bad and needs dramatic improvement if he's going to be a NFL QB

There are some teams with bad quarterbacks but I don't think saying he's better IYO (than someone you shouldn't want) is a good argument

The question for any QB is whether they are a NFL quality QB and I think that is still debatable for Tebow but probably not for guys like:

1) rogers
2) brady
3) manning
4) brees
5) manning
6) romo
7) schaub
8) roethlesberger
9) ryan
10) rivers
11) cutler
12) flacco
13) vick
14) stafford
15) sanchez

I suppose we could debate whether he's better than guys like fitzpatrick, cassel, alex smith, matt moore, an old hasselbeck/palmer, dalton, newton, kolb, mccoy, freeman, grossman...

but those debates would be kinda garbage because there's some debate about whether those guys are legit NFL QBs today.

The apprehension about Tebow translating to the NFL game was definitely warranted because he had a lot of question marks in his game. But then it started turning into a critique of every single pass he threw as if he's the first young QB to struggle throwing the ball and that he'd never improve.

Then he started to win a few games, and the media swung too far the other way and have now created a backlash against him where people are hoping he fails.

Cause Blaine Gabbert may be the worst QB in football. His shitty performance was expected.

Tebow is definitely one of the worst QBs in the league. He is better than shitty replacements, such as Caleb Hanie and the like, but I would definitely prefer Hasselbeck or Flacco over Tebow.

Well, that ain't true.

Newton is in the top 15 with the other 14 you mentioned.

I would consider replacing Flacco with Smith or Hasselbeck.

The QB rating thru last week seem to disagree with this board. And, after this week, his rating will actually go higher.

I mean yeah, not elite obviously, but you can obviously to WORSE in this league
