Initial thoughts-- maybe he just wanted out on his own, and the opportunities were disappearing.

Another 8-4 season at Auburn, and would his prospects really be much better? At least with A-State, he probably gets a contract he can get out of pretty easy, gets a very veteran team that won a conference title and that returns the entire offense essentially next year. A winning record at a Sun Belt school that's primed to be at or near the top of it's conference next year, and a Hugh Freeze like step up into a major conference HC job might be easier to achieve than coming off another 4th place finish in the SEC-W.

YMMV, of course.
