Jay Barker said on the radio in Birmingham yesterday that if Alabama wanted him all they had to do was offer him and he would have gone there. I don't get these guys sometimes. Do they really think that no football player can resist bama. Not sure why it ticked me off so much.

Personally, I don't know what would be funnier- if that's complete BS or completely true.

Thank Ron Cooper

And think how all of the DI coaches who felt he was not worthy an offer will all be watching him this Saturday in NY lol

When Wilson watched Mathieu play, he saw an undersized player who had a burning desire to disprove what he had always been told. "You're a little too short," Mathieu was told. "You're a little too small." Mathieu made sure he got Wilson's attention during the coach's visits to practice. He walked up in front of Wilson and reached down and slapped the ground repeatedly while screaming, "I'm here!" "He let it be known that you better recognize who I am," Wilson said. "I loved it."

seeing as how late we offered him, he's prob right if Bama offered him first. he might have reconsidered if LSU had a counter offer, but with his offer sheet outside LSU, he prob would have committed to Alabama if they were the first big school to offer him.

according to the game cast UT and Bama each had him in a camp and did not offer...

exactly what i implied in my post, or so i thought. they saw him at their camps and overlooked him, probably because of his size.

He almost single handedly beat West Monroe in the play offs two years ago. Aug lost 28-27. TM had a punt return, pass reception and an interception return for touchdowns.

well, he also was quoted as saying
"LSU had been number one on my list. It was between LSU and Tennessee it was basically who was going to offer me first." Plenty of 4 star recruits get offers prior to even their junior year being over. hell we have a 3 star recruit now who had an offer in august of his junior year. Avery Johnson had an offer in the spring of his sophomore year. The guys that don't get early offers like that when they're rated that high, especially in state guys, are guys that are overlooked because of size, where they play, etc

all that stuff is blown out of proportion as far as i'm concerned. He went to the UTenn camp and beasted, then came to the LSU camp, got his offer and committed. He was a 4 star, and the top rated rivals cover guy that year. He didn't get those other offers because he was rock solid to LSU because of Wilson being on the staff. Anyone else would have been wasting their time. Look at Eric Reid's offer list:

LSU
NC State
Tulane
Stanford
Tennessee

Not quite like Mathieu's but similar. When you commit to LSU or anywhere else really early nobody is going to put the full court press on and waste their resources. TM7 is fantastic player who came in with high expectations. If anybody wants to run with an underdog story its Claiborne easily.

giving a guy an offer isn't exactly wasting resources IMO if you think the player is good enough. i know there were other things involved, but janzen jackson was thought to be one of our stronger commits up until a few months before signing day and then went to tennessee, a team that had gone 5-7 the year before and hadn't even been recruited hard by them until kiffin got to knoxville. if a player is good enough, it's never a waste of resources no matter how strong you think their commitment is to another school

across the board the junior year and summer commitments have less bloated offer lists across the board than the signing day or all star game guys. That's all i was getting at.

Try this. It's a great read from the New York Times.
Here's a quote from it:

While Mathieu needed some work to qualify academically, Miles was so impressed he offered him a scholarship while the camp was still going on.

“I don’t give a flip what his grades are,” Porter recalled Miles telling him. “I want him on my team.”

NYT

A funny little aside is that one school offering him a scholarship was ... Western Kentucky University.

Saban is all about the measurables, and if a kid does not have the critical factors rated for the position he does not offer. Vllahos probably wouldn't have been offered if he hadn't been offered by Shula's staff before Nick was hired. Reason, he is too short for a center,(under 6'1").

Long story short, he was impressive but a risk given his size. We took the risk. Lucky us, seriously.

yup. mathieu was obviously underrated but if he didn't have an offer from tennessee after his camp there I have a bad memory. I know nobody complained when he was offered a scholarship here. People were pissed when the "2 star out of fair park" got an offer.

Not true...lots of complaints when he was offered by us. I mean, he was an undersized 'no name' with a rather pitiful offer list. He wasn't the only person bitched about in that class...but then, that class is one reason why I trust our coaches' abilities to measure talent more than I trust star ratings and offer lists.

That recruiting class was in the midst of the 'negatiger' reign online...RP had been booted, we suffered through a couple of seasons with Crowton 'coaching' our QBs and it was all 'CLM is this decade's Larry Coker!!!'. So a lot of the outrage over recruiting was, IMO, due to that negative environment. I wasn't a basher then, but I must admit that I scratched my head over a few offers here and there...I've since learned to just go with the flow and trust that for every Rocky D there will be someone who will play far above his 'star' rating.
