BCS Poll 2007

Week 7
#1 Mizzou
#2 West Virginia
#3 Ohio St
#4 UGA
#5 Kansas
#6 Virginia Tech
#7 LSU
This was what the poll looked like this week in 2007, going into Championship Weekend. Here's a recap of what happened next.
Mizzou got blown ouy by OU in the Big 12 Championship. WVU lost to PITT in their final game. OSU was idle, having last played on November 17th! UGA was idle, because they did not win the SECE (sound familiar?) Kansas was idle having not won it's division in the Big 12 (a trend is forming!) VT beat Boston College in the Big East Championship game. LSU beat Tennessee in the SEC Championship game.
Things settled like this in the final poll:
#1 OSU
#2 LSU
#3 VT
#4 UGA
#5 Mizzou
#6 USC
#7 Kansas
Mizzou and WVU lost their way out of the game so they got tossed.
And then things get strange, at least in terms of the way the polls traditionally work. UGA and LSU had not played each other, so what the pollsters CLEARLY did was decide that a team that had not even won it's side of the conference should not jump a team that had won the same conference title. Boom...down goes UGA. Same for Kansas. The teams hadn't played each other but Kansas had not even won its division, let along its conference. Bye bye, Jayhawks.
With the normal "it's better to lose early than late" way the polls usually work, VT should then have slid into the #2 spot. But, the voters took their heads out of their collective asses and went back and realized that LSU had curb stomped VT earlier in the season and it would make no sense at all to have a team that had lost directly to LSU be ahead of them. Kudoes to the pollsters for getting it right, here. Then there's UGA.
Now...will the voters do it again and slide BAMA to #2 with a OSU win over OU? I have no clue, but I think they will. The point of this is only to show that they HAVE done quite a bit of re-evaluating in the final poll once before...so it would not exactly be treading new ground by penalizing BAMA for MERELY being the SECW runners-up.

My guess is enough voters will agree the SECw runner up is better than Ok. State or VT this year and vote that way. Unless Ok. State wins by three TD's I have no doubt about that myself. Not sure why people are so worried about Bama??? LSU will win the NCG regardless of the competition.

Remarkable things fell so right for the Tigers to get in the 'ship.

Man I can still remember where I was when all that played out.
Definitely the surprise of the year right there now.

So no other conference gets a shot? That's dumb. What has Bama done to say they are better than all conference champions?

Great breakdown I forgot LSU was 7 with one weekend left, amazing

Was that the year UGA was so pissed the politicians were threatening to right laws about the BCS?

Interesting, but I'm all geared up to play Bama in the BCSNCG. I think we own them big time 2nd time around.

Yup. Georgia was in the middle of an epic butthurt.

it will be interesting to watch but there is such a love affair with Saban
I would like to think that voters will do what is right- whatever that is

No offense Roger, but there is nothing to prove Bama is surely better than OSU. They have no common opponents, and the SEC was just horrible this year. There is a reason the computers all rate the Big 12 as the best conference, and people seem to forget that they don't have the benefit of playing an extra cupcake like the SEC with their 9 game conference schedule.

Thanks for this recap. A friend of mine and I were discussing just this today and how UGA fit perfectly into Bama's position.
I think it boils down to this. Alabama's resume or victories don't amount to OK State's (given a win over OU, which is of course not a given). Alabama's only claim is that their loss is a "better" loss than OK State's. So, apparently, the measure of a team is who they've lost to and not who they've beaten if Alabama gets into the MNC.
My advice to OK State would be to use CLM's 2007 "We were undefeated in regulation" campaign, but apprently they are scared shitless of the 800 pounder and want to crawfish into the Fiesta Bowl.

I can see that.

My interest in this isn't driven by worry or fear, though that makes a nice hammer with which to bash people with in this discussion...call them chicken. haha
Seriously, it's more about the integrity of the system. I'm one of the VERY FEW people who kind of like the BCS set up...I just happen to think it needs a few rather obvious tweaks...the first making it a rule that in order to be in the Final Two in the final BCS poll, a team MUST have won it's conference. This "fixes" the Nebraska issue from around 2000, the OU/SC bullshite from 2003, would have ensured no rematch in 2006 with Mich and OSU, etc.

then wouldn't people would just say, Bama is also undefeated in regulation

I agree, but they had better start campaigning. I realize that they have to beat OU, which is not a given, but they're not speaking up at all. They're not even trying to sway some voters right now. It's a little sad.

It does not matter. This is politics. You start throwing out everything that may help your case.
