Walking Dead is a pretty good show, but yeah it's no "Boardwalk Empire" that said, it's a solid action drama in its own right.

This board is fascinated by Zombies, myself included. It's like the Anti-romantic vampire. Non stop killing machines. Not every movie or TV has to exist in a real environment. Most of the reason we watch TV is to temporarily escape our reality and pay attention (live our minds in) another one.

The real enemy is all this reality TV and competitions. This is truly killing modern TV, not well written dramas based on awesome Zombie Graphic novels.

Walking Dead is boring.

You're not comparing two HBO shows here so that's one obvious answer. TWD is much more widely accessible. Zombies are a pretty popular subject and, as you mentioned, the dumbass moat and zombie world talk takes up the majority of the threads.

Filter the threads down to just actual show discussion and I think the disparity in thread length would be much more reasonable.

WD is good enough to rise above "poor taste"

it's an interesting concept that crosses a section of popular chatter on da net

the issue is its execution

Much traffic while great TV shows like Boardwalk Empire only get 2-4 pages of discussion? Seems like we have a ton of 15 year olds talking about how great moats are or what weapons they'd use in a fantasy land.

A hot blonde grabbed a dude's junk and they boned in the car after slaughtering zombies.

That's great television my friend.

a couple of reasons..

BWE wasnt that great at first, and a lot of people gave up on it..

TWD is bad, and based on a comic.. so it gets a lot of argument going..

but mostly, more people have access to TWD than BWE, because of the channels that broadcast them.

I think this sums it up quite well.

To add to it, TWD has just gotten bad this season, and people are still trying to argue that it hasn't. I think that is why you see such longer threads.

Most people are in agreement BWE is good, so less topics filled with long arguments.

I like both shows. Boardwalk Empire is probably my favorite show on TV right now, but I don't feel bad about liking The Walking Dead.

It's called premium television vs. basic cable. That's really all it is.

I want to watch BWE, but I don't get HBO.

Kind of harsh to have a superiority complex about it though.

Yes. But the difference in length between the boardwalk empire & walking dead discussions represented on this board is miniscule in comparison to the difference in discussion length pertaining to good movies & bad movies represented on this board. Walking Dead may get 5 times the spotlight that Boardwalk gets, but bad movies get 10 times the spotlight that good movies get. It's why I partially abandoned this board for the Poli & Outdoor boards; I just visit other movie forums instead.

Like anything, it's always much easier to dissect and debate the bad, than it is to talk about the good.

That was one of my arguments about Lost and why it started so much discussion. When something is actually well made, gets it's point across clearly, how do you REALLY discuss it? You just end up praising it in union.

Why does Casblanca never get it's own thread? Because it's generally a great movie and no one can really argue about it.

Well honestly I love Boardwalk Empire but by the time I get around to watching it
(I don't have HBO so I have to download and watch at a latter date) most of my thoughts have already been covered on the thread.

So say where as I just watched it last night I don't really feel like commenting on the thread.

It's been great from the start.

If Casablanca came out today the thread would on page 3 with 4 replies and there would be an 8 page discussion about some "great" new movie called I Am Legend at the top of page 1.

Also, cough is correct: whether you like BWE or not it has been consistent throughout. I've loved every episode of the show.

As weird as it is to say it's much easier to theorize about how one would go about surviving the zombie apocalypse than it is how you would handle being a prohibition era gangster. I mean we can't go back in time. Really that's what most of the WD threads are. Debates on how you would handle the situation more so than analysis of the show itself.

The thing that always disappoints me with Casablanca talk on here(well not always but more often than not) is that everyone watches it and likes it the first time they see it. But there is never any follow up like "Hey what other classic movies that are like this should I be watching?" I always hope when people see a classic movie they like that they follow up on it and watch a few more.

end mini rant/

We all champion smaller movies from time to time, and people have come to this board and had their opinion changed.

How often can I pimp out City Lights and not get called out for it?

How many people have seen Seven Samurai strictly because of hearing about it on this board?

We do a decent enough job.

We've had some great threads about modern classics though, Memento, Children of Men, Prestige, etc. Good stuff.

I sort of agree. Anything on the "Film Buff" Top 20 (not necessarily bad movies) will get 3-5 pages but it would be a cold day in Hell before we see a good discussion of Kurosawa's Ran or Solaris.

What are some good ones? I used to be a part of the Facebook group "I Know More About Movies Than Anybody I've Ever Met" and there was a group of people who blew my minds with their film knowledge. I never would have heard of Tarkovsky, Tarr, Ozu, Watkins, and even REALLY obscure directors like Shuji Terayama without them. I have yet to see another forum that goes that in-depth.

I think there are enough film buffs here on this board the thing is the buffs don't really start any threads so we're only left to comment on the ones that are started.
