What's your favorite thing about being an outdoorsman?

I'd have to say it's the relationship that my dad and I have... I was always his fishing/hunting partner growing up.. I guess I owe a lot of my success (good job, did well in school, not a drug head, etc) to that.. I always had a place I could "get away" from everything.
I also love the friends I have that also enjoy the outdoors and always have plenty of stories to tell around the table or camp fire..
Oh and I love the competition of fishing.
so I ask you OBers, why do you do what you do?

wow....so many things but the first is probably the beauty I enjoy. I love being one with nature.
I love fire and the stories that are told as well.
Depends on what it is. Fishing....I love the fight and then when I cook em up.
Hiking....good excercise and the beauty.
Backpacking/climbing....sense of accomplishment and just all out got damned fun.
Rafting is just pure fun. Nice that there is awesome scenery as well.

I like to kill...seriously, I like to kill.

The friendships are a definite plus, hell a lot of us on the OB didnt know each other before this football season and we all get along great and have a dam good time at tailgates
I love the food, tonight we're cooking ducks I shot, deer DieselTiger shot, and fish Redneck caught this weekend.
And I agree with you on the relationship between me and my dad, I honestly believe that hunting makes my dad the proudest of me. I definitely did not live up to his academic expectations (he graduated in petroleum engineering with a ~3.8ish; Im going to finish in 6 years
) But the smile on his face when I go 3 for 3 on a flock of ducks or down a deer/turkey is the best. He started bringing me hunting at 3 years old and thats the one thing that I have excelled the best in

Getting away from the real world for a little while.
Posted on 11/14/11 at 6:10 pm to The Sportsman
I don't think I can go in the woods or on the water without thinking about my dad. Growing up I was his hunting buddy. I can still remember small things like when he told me good job when I spotted a rabbit when we were walking and I was about 10. Sucks that now that I'm older its harder for me to get away from work and my own family to spend time at the camp with him.
As far as being in the outdoors. I love the challenge. Me against my prey. It can be both rewarding and humbling. And I like shooting guns, ripping lips off, and eating.

This. Helps clear your mind too.
It also provides a place for me to act upon my maniacal homicidal urges without looking like a nut.

3 things:
1) The thrill.
2) Camaraderie
3) Carrying on a tradition generations old. It's a connection to my family.

My Dad taught me everything I know in the outdoors from hunting and fishing. Every time I get in the woods now, I reflect on all of those times.
I also love the serenity of being away with all of the everyday stresses that life can bring.
Killing or catching is icing on the cake.

For me, its never been about being with my dad blah blah blah. My dad hunted in Bunkie as a kid and now plays golf a lot and is just starting to fish again. Getting outdoors is something I just chose to do on my own instead of other things. With school and general drama of BR, the best thing about the outdoors is leaving it all behind and having a good time with friends and nature. I live for the weekends which make my week a whole lot more exciting. Did I mention that I love to choot things??? and drink beer?? and ride around doing dumb shite on 4 wheels???
Cheers to the beautiful outdoors and home we call Louisiana.......the TRUE paradise!

In no particular order
Getting back to nature
It's peaceful
Feeling like more like a mans man. No urban hipster nonsens out there
Relationships are built that can't be explained

I was out of the hunting and fishing for about 6 years while i was in the navy. I guess i kinda took it for granted and when i couldnt do it whenever i wanted it killed me. So since i have gotten out of the navy i take just about every opportunity i have to go up to the camp and hunt and fish. I love it! No bullshite, or politics, or everyday stresses. Just out in the woods or on the boat chillin. I always have a great time whether i kill or catch anything, just love being out there with nature.
Also provides a good place for me to drink whiskey undisturbed
