Rats in my yard

They come out of the trees at night and eat whatever my dog leaves in her bowl. If I flip the lights after dinner there are 3 or 4 on my porch. I've put traps in my storage room but they don't touch them. I've killed a couple with 22 pest control rounds but they aren't that quiet and I don't want to piss of my neighbors.
The dog's a bloodhound (100 lbs.) and really doesn't leave anything except crumbs. Why are they coming to my place? I don't feed the birds. They have not gotten into her food. I do have citrus trees but haven't found any half-eaten grapefruits. How do I get rid of them without poisoning my dogs in the process? TIA

Outdoor dog feeding is why my neighborhood has rats.

Had some rats at my duck camp. Got a couple of cats and just left them outside.....Problem solved.

Plenty of traps. You have to position them along walls near the food where they're going. Only way I could get rid of the ones in my apartment a couple years back was to kill most in a trap, after about 11 I didn't see them anymore. And having stray cats hanging around helped too.

Man I had some great fun with this. Would load my .22 buckmark with ratshot, then sneak up to the back door where the dogfood is under the carport. Rush out and bust a cap, then turn off the lights in case the neighbors came out. Lots of fun killing rats. Also would go out with headlamp and shoot them out of Japanese plum trees.
If you have some area where dog can't go, like ourdoor shop or separate poolyard, put some poison out.

There is NO way these bastards can sustain themselves off of what they find in my dog's bowl. I live on a corner lot. Neither the neighbor behind me nor the one beside me has an outside dog. The same goes for the one neighbor across the street. I'm pretty sure there's at nest in the base of one of my trees. It's a nice magnolia so I'm not willing to trade it for them.

Get a cat that's half wild

Look around and find the rat poison sticks. They have a hole drilled through them so you can hang them in trees with wire. They are called Just One Bite Bars made by Farnam Companies.

Go to the pound and get a couple of Cats... They will rid the problem with the quick unless the rats decide to move inside your house.

Anyway one time I go to turn the grill on for dinner and a fricking rat is inside my grill eating dried up bbq sauce. He climbed in from underneath, just enough room for that bastard. As soon as I opened up the lid it scared the everlivingshit out of me and he darted out the way he came and took off like lightning.
I bought some traps and killed two but it was never the one I saw in the grill.
I didn't want to get rid of my grill but I didn't want to use it again so I stuffed cardboard into his entryway to keep it out (was planning on giving it away). Someone comes to pick it up and that little fricker got in somehow and was now on top of the racks eating bbq sauce again. I lifted it and again it scared the crap out of me and instinctively threw the lid down at the same time that rodent was jumping out and I caught its tail in the lid and he was hanging.
I cannot stand rodents and it makes me want to yack to this day thinking about it. I went and grabbed a trekking pole and was screaming at that thing while I beat it dead.
Finally called the health dept on this woman and showed her the pic and told her thanks for making have to spend money because she was too lazy to do a damn thing with her backyard.
RANT!!!!!!!
I'll post a pic from my phone if I still have it.

The only good thing about the whole deal is I love my new gas grill....before you crucify me I have a charcoal one as well. Gas is for the days we need to get the show on the road. The only meat that ever goes on my stove is fried chicken/fried pork chops/ground beef.

They can't get into my new one, not even a mouse. Absolutely no access for them. That was the first thing I looked at when getting a new one. frick that....wouldn't be able to eat my food and enjoy it.

quote:I want them in mine. I close the doors to my sun room and chase them out. Watching the terrier go at it is high comedy.
