I was thinking Les Miles and Nick saban were close to being the best college coaches in the land , Millen named Patterson (TCU) and Peterson (Boise State) the best coaches in college football. This sounded like a bold statement to me, anyone agree with Millen?

Eh, they are both great coaches, but there isn't really a clear cut "best" in college football.

I lean towards Saban being the best in college football because he has resurrected each program he goes to without much of a hitch.

In fairness, the coach was handicapped by Millen's shitty roster.

On the other hand Miles has never resurrected a program when called upon to do so?

I think Saban is one of the best, no question. I just think the point is a bit overworked. Miles proved he can resurrect a program at Okie State. He just hasn't had to do it at LSU. And Alabama has to be among the easier places to resurrect a program in the country. Heck, even Shula and DuBose had high ranking teams and recruits. Saban deserves a lot of credit, but he isn't the only coach who can/has turned programs around. Meyer, Spurrier at both Florida and SC. And SC is probably one of the most challenging places in the SEC to turn into a consistent winner. I am not a Petrino fan, but he is doing pretty well at Arkansas , which is a tougher job than either LSU or Bama to win at consistently.

But he loses to a lot of teams he should not lose to. Like UAB, ULM and like a 24 pt lead at half to Auburn last year.If he has the talent they say he has every year he shoukld never lose. Everyone knows he has NFL talent playing against college players.

Don't forget Saban at Michigan St. Okie State was not a great team when we took Miles from them. He was an average hire at the time.

SC has a lot of talent as a state -- but a lot of team vy for that talent.

Saban developed infrastructure at LSU which is his lasting legacy. That is what really changed the LSU program for this past decade.

Petrino is damn good and is a top 10, maybe top 5 coach even without a national championship. He made Louisville a national title contender and he has done the same with Arkansas.

I don't like making a list on something as subjective as "who is the best coach" but with that said:

Saban
Urban
Spurrier
Miles
Petrino
Stoops
Brown
Peterson
.
.
.

Petrino is very good, but probably even more of an arse than Saban.

What's kinda funny is the Saban Jr's over at Fla (Muschamp) and Tenn (Dooley); they seem to have the ranting and raving down, but not much else.

The two coaches likely going to Atlanta this year seem on the other end of the spectrum. Les always looks like he's having a blast out there, and Richt frankly looks stoned.

I would put Miles ahead of Saban on that list, as he's beat him 3-2. Based on the nature of those games, and looking at Miles' record in bowls versus Saban's, I'd say Miles handles pressure and adversity better. I think if you can disrupt Saban's plan, he doesn't adapt very well.

Urban Meyer is totally based on finding the right player to run his gimmicky offense. Take away Alex Smith at Utah and he never gets the Fla job; take away Tebow and he's another Zook.

Eh, there are too many variables for head-to-head to be the only thing I would use to compare. I agree that Saban sometimes doesn't adapt as he should. Miles is very stubborn though, as well.

Meyer won in 2006 with Leak as his starter...thats not a gimmick. Tebow was a 5 star top 20 player in the country that he recruited. Alex Smith became a 1st round pick under his tenure. I don't think you can just take away his best players and then say "he wouldn't have been as good"

I put the head-to-head in because LSU-Bama is usually a big game, as well as the bowls. Miles has a better overall record in big games (except of course Arkansas).

True and point taken
However, others on that list have been able to win without excellent QB play, by having dominant defenses or great running games. You'd think Meyer would be able to. BTW without Tebow, I think LSU takes 3 out of 4 during that time period, and Fla doesn't get a title (Tebow and his jump pass was the difference in 06; and I think we beat them in 09 without him too).
