Bank fees

I know this has been done recently, but looking for current info. Just noticed today of being charged 2 seperate fees on one of my checking accounts through Regions. A $10 "monthly" fee and a $4 Debit card fee. Has anyone had any success in talking to the person they deal with at their branch and having their fees waved by threatening to take your business elsewhere? Any banks/credit unions not charging fees? I'm not paying $14 a month to anyone to do business with them.

I need to find a new bank too. Suntrust wants me to keep 5k in checking for me to not pay any fees. Screw that.

Thank Dick Durbin.....he's the piece of crap who crafted the legislation that is forcing the banks to levy these fees.

Support your local economy and bank with a credit union. You won't go back to a big bank I promise.

I agree with this.

However, USAA is an excellent bank to do business with.

I work at Hancock- we've had tons of Regions customers come in the last couple weeks because of our free checking. I really don't care much for my job and am not being a cheerleader when I say Hancock has good accounts for people who don't like fees.

I had a Hancock account, but we don't have them in Memphis.
Regions and SunTrust are the two major players. Occasionally a BoA. Hmmmmm....

Word. I'll second the guy who said USAA is good. Their customer service is outstanding. I hear good things about Ally, too. Not sure if you're a more traditional type person though. If hancock ever starts charging for checking I'll probably go to USAA.

I've had the same question. These fees are terrible.

I just got my Regions $10 monthly charge and I'm pretty pissed about it. I fricking called them to make sure I wasn't' going to have to pay the monthly fee. She said my account qualified to have the monthly fee waived but I'd still get hit with the $4 debit card fee.
Lousy customer service.
ETA: Regions must be out of their fricking minds. I am closing all 3 of my accounts tomorrow. I had already opened 2 new accounts with credit unions but I still had some funds in the old one for some outstanding auto drafts and scheduled payments that I was waiting to clear.

I don't pay anything on my Capitol one Checking, Savings or "small business rewards checking".
The regular accounts are completely free, and the business one isn't bad, no minimum and only a $.50 charge per transaction over 200.
I left Chase because I thought Capitol One had the best options.

I went from Hancock to neighbors about 2 years ago and never looked back
Their loan rates are pretty much unbeatable and their rewards checking is pretty solid
Their online banking is lacking but it gets the job done.

They're charging you a monthly fee because they honestly want you to leave. They are losing money on you.
Many of the people that have free checking accounts are the same ones that constantly come in to the branch, make phone calls to the branch etc etc taking up the time of the employees who could all be taking care of higher net worth individuals that they actually make money off of.
Forever this was ok becuase they were making money off of your debit card swipes, but now thanks to genious durbin they can no longer do so. So in order to keep you as a profitable customer, they now much charge for their services.

However, I think in the same light they are shredding any form of customer loyalty they may have once had. The checking account touchpoint with the customer allows for Bank X to understand that customers behaviors and cater directly to his or her needs. While the customers will probably shop around for a major banking item (mortgage, etc), the bank with their checking would likely be the first bank they would consider.
In short, free checking could have been viewed as a sunk cost of business in the industry -- instead they decided to go another direction.

If anyone wants an invite to USAA, post up your email.

Hopefully credit unions will maintain their ability to provide free checking to the masses.
