I am going tonight on someone else's dime. Has anyone been recently? What is good to order there? I went about 2 years ago and was not impressed at all.
*Update- It was four of us that went last Thursday night. No one had alcohol and the total bill before tip was $107.00. Arrived at 7:30 and did not leave until 9:45 or so because service was very slow. Everyone looked at the buffet and opted not to go with that. We ordered the following items:
2 appetizers:
Boudin balls (4 to a serving)- hubby said they were slightly greasy
Fried alligator-(probably 8 small pieces)I had one piece and found it very chewy. Also consensus at the table was tartar sauce contained entirely too much mayo.
4 entrees: *note the entrees are not served with salad but they do bring a bread basket to the table. Rolls were soft but not much flavor.
Mini crab cake appetizer- I ordered this as an entree and also had the steamed veggies that my male friend does not eat. Crabcake portion was good but lacked flavor, contained too much breading, and looked like it was pan fried in old oil or not properly cleaned skillet. Had black specks in a few places. Steamed veggies were green beans, wax beans and baby carrots.
Hamburger steak- hubby ordered this because he is not a big seafood eater and does not order steak out. He said it was good, gravy consistency was thick. This came with a side of fries on the same plate that were swimming in the gravy. He is a fan of Acme oyster boo fries so this was not an issue for him.
Fried catfish covered in etoufee- male friend ordered. Not sure of the exact name. He said he was happy with the dish. He also ordered a stuffed baked potato and the only comment was it was the temperature of lava when served.
Shrimp in garlic butter sauce- female friend ordered. It was served with three crustini type toast circles and she opted for a stuffed baked potato as her side as well. She did not comment that there was anything remarkable about her shrimp but I did not really comment anything negative on my dish as well.
Upon leaving female friend (who had the gift certificate responsible for this night out) stated that she would not drive from BR to eat there again but she would stop if in the area. She is a big fan of old buildings and rustic atmosphere though.
My husband and I dined at not your mamas cafe a few times when in the area and found that food preferable. I also am not very tolerant of the wait.
Final observation: I can have better food with the same or better prices ten minutes from my house with half the wait just by eating at sammys.

charbroiled oysters are pretty good. Just wierd to me ordering it that far from the coast for some reason.

Last couple times I tried it, the place was off by a mile. I'll likely not go back.
Their cheesecake is always really good (except for last time I went

I haven't been in about a year. I think it depends on what you order. The oysters rock tasted like oysters topped with spinach madeline. Sent them back. Gumbo and crawfish bisque are usually good, but they were not. We were told the usual chef was out that day. I would think the other cooks would know the recipes, but...
Shrimp grand central was good. Fried fish was good. Salads were good. I think they changed the bread they use some time ago. It used to Poupart's, I think, but it's just a soft bread more like a hot dog bun, now. Nothing special and not what I'd like for a poboy.
These are dated observations...

I've had some good meals there since the new owners took over, but again, I think it depends on what you order. It wasn't great with the new owners, but it was good at one time. The few times I've had the chargrilled oysters, they were very good, but that's probably been 5 or so years ago.

I was hoping that things had changed in the last few years since I have been there. I am not excited about going but maybe I will be surprised. At least I am not paying
.

Not paying is good. If you like fried food, they really used to do fried shrimp very well. They were a good size with a light crispy coating. I would imagine the fried fish is fine, also.
I don't know if they have the oysters and shrimp grand central on the menu. They didn't for a long time, but they would make upon request. It's very rich. I order it with all shrimp.
The trout meuniere is usually pretty good and safe. There's a hearts of palm salad that's good. I've been told the fried chicken is good and someone I know used to order the stuffed eggplant often, though I've never had it.
It's a shame if they haven't straightened things out, but their location is such that they are nearly the only eat place around and will still have a big lunch crowd with the specials.

P.S. Report back since it appears not many have eaten there, recently.

There are three people going so I will report back with an update tomorrow.

I hope it surprises you and that you all enjoy your meals. I hate that it might not be so good anymore. I love the atmosphere of the old place. Sat at the bar they put in, drank and watched a game one Saturday afternoon for the heck of it. It was good people watching too.

It will be fun because the two I am going with will just drink more if the food is not good (we are using a gift card that is about to expire).

Well, I'm sorry about the health problems!

At least. Some of my hubs family were the original owners. It was so good back then, and worth the drive. I haven't been since they retired, and hate to hear that it has slipped. Lots of good memories (and food) there.

I went for their seafood buffet a couple months ago and was extremely disappointed. Doubt I'll go back.
