I was told this afternoon that LSU started the tradition of throwing oranges onto the field during the LSU-OM '70 game (one where we won 61-17) in view of an Orange Bowl bid.

Now fast forward to '82. With the Orange Bowl on the line we defeated FSU 55-21 (this was the game where a dense fog settled on the field in the 2nd half). Apparently, FSU brought their mascot (Chief Osceloa and horse). When he appeared on the field during the 2nd half he was apparently pelted with oranges to the point where he had to take cover under the SE stands.

Can anyone confirm if this happened? I was in the student section and don't recall seeing it.

I don't remember the horse. But, Risher, Hilliard and Martin were awesome. Too bad we lost to Tulane later.

Was also in student section, don't remember Chief getting pelted (could have happened, I had depleted the Jack Daniels supply by then) but do remember the oranges raining down as the blowout progressed. Didn't Chief come out on the field in the pregame with his flaming spear and Mike ran over and broke it? Crowd was in a frenzy. Had a friend run to a payphone to call his bookie to double his bet on the Tigers - no way we were going to lose that game.

I was there, and the oranges mainly came late in the game. It was pretty cool looking seeing them rain down on the field from the student section.

The raining oranges were featured on the nightly news, I remember that part quite well.

I was there and remember it clearly.

The "chief" on the horse was a comlete setup. He was not really from Fla. State. It was an LSU guy dressed up like a "Seminole" and he did ride a horse. The Tiger mascot pulled him off and pretended to stick him with the lance the rider had been carrying.

Later in the game, the crowd was throwing oranges onto the field.

I was there. It was before the game started. Funniest thing I've ever seen in Tiger Stadium.

oranges were thrown, rumor had it that some of them were frozen solid and/or orange croquet balls. I don't remember anything about the mascot.

i was at both games and yes we snuck in oranges and yes we tossed them on the field. in both games a win sent us to the orange bowl. i don't recall pelting the fsu mascot though but i remember archie manning had a cast on his arm and we tryed to pelt him. in those days, the hate for ole miss was real.

I was there and it really happened. Thank GOD we were sitting at the top.

Not fun being pelted by oranges (by all the people who can't throw)

I don't remember oranges being thrown at chief osceola. But I do remember the spear and it was before the game. Fog did settle in during the 2nd half.

My best memory though was me and some friends use to sell peanuts during the game and when the oranges were pushed off the field we were selling them back to the students 3 or 4 for a $1.

I may have sold you some oranges

Oranges were on the field before the game even started in 82, trust me, I was throwing them with everyone else

FSU did not bring their horse. That was a "setup" guy for Mike to trample

but the oranges did fly for a full four quarters and yes penalties were called on LSU but it was way over by that point and no one cared

ahhhh when fans could be really stupid, what fun those days were

The Fla. St. QB that year, is a good friend of mine and he has some great stories of that game. Besides getting pelted with oranges, he said that it was the worst physical beating he'd ever had. When they came out of the visitor's tunnel and Mike roared from his cage, he said he almost peed his pants. He said Tiger Stadium was the toughest place to play no doubt.
