Total Defense
The Bengals are no. 1, and the Patriots have the 32nd ranked defense...
Also of note... tied for 3rd in sacks with 13 sacks for the season.

Was surprised at first, then I remembered how bad everyone's defense is playing this year.

no kidding. Tackling is especially bad. There's a lot of leaky yardage inflating stats.

The sun must have risen in the west this morning.

Top 10 against the run and top 10 rushing offense. That's going to bode quite well if they end the season there. I'd like to see the turnover margin improve, but they're definitely on the right track overall.

LSU #1 Defense, Saints #1-2 Offense. I love it.

with our offense, all we need is a middle of the road D!

Defense will get better. Smith and Porter back and looking good, Jordan looks to be improving (I don't understand how he has 0 sacks, could have sworn he got one vs Jax and Chicago, he must just be getting pressures that drive the QB into someone else that gets the sack). Most of all, no offense we play the rest of the regular season comes close to GB or Houston except Detroit (still a step below those two, IMO).

Top 10 against the run, how can that be? Maurice lil big man had almost a 100 yards off 10 carries.

The Saints Defense is working very hard to get better, they are playing hard and with lots of heart, they are obviously doing the best that they can, and GW is doing a good job as DC.
There are times when I wish that the Saints D had players that were more physically gifted with raw football talent, however, but, every fan of every football team shares my wish.

I think rushing is going to be crazy this year. Every team is missing tackles, I'm liking our D more and more though.
I think it's only a matter of time before they establish a badass rhythm. We know of a few guys
who tore it up in 2009-2010, so we know what they can do once they step up.

That's why I can't get how so many are schitzed out. Projecting much from 4 games has little weight.
Cincy #1 D has faced Browns, Broncos, Niners, & Bills. I'd venture to say we might have near or #1 D if we had played those teams.
Defenses on a whole are continue to get worse. Everything the NFL does is towards that. The major comebacks are exactly what they want for TV ratings. As long as teams have a shot at winning a game people watch. More like the NBA each year to me. I don't care for it that much philosophically but since we have one of the best teams built to play like that I'm happy.
Heard last weekend on tv- 1977: 3 games in the entire year with 300yd passing games. 2011: 11 400yd passing games in the first 3 weeks.
nice trivia: Saints second half D has allowed 27 total pts.

Exactly Blues, the media (and some Saintards) are acting as though our defense is very bad... but we've gone against two top 5 offenses and have shut down teams in the second half.
Gregg Williams' defense seems to attack the first half, find the weaknesses in the offense, and then exploit those weaknesses in the second half.
Championship.

yet he only ran for 2 first downs.
He had 2 big runs in the game. We shut him down outside of that. He never had back to back good runs, which kept them from getting 1st downs

I absolutely hate this comment.
Its actually the other way around. with a 1 ranked D, all you need is a middle of the road Offense (because of forced turnovers and short fields).

Wut? It's both dumb dumb. We just happen to happen to have an elite offense. We're not the Baltimore Ravens.
ETA: Would you rather have a top notch defense and Chase Daniel running the offense?
Or better yet, we could be the Falcons and have middle of the pack everything.

If our D can play anywhere close to the way they did vs Chicago and most of the J'ville game, we will be alright.
Really the offense let us down a little last Sunday.
But now we have an even more dangerous offense with Ivory back.
Jeezum crickets: Brees, Henderson, Meachem, Moore, Colston, Arrington, Graham, DThomas, PThomas, Ivory, Ingram, Sproles - who can fricking top this?
We are one bad goal line play call away from possibly 4-0....

Yeah I've been telling people Houston and Green bay are two of the best offenses in the league. Saints, New England, and Detroit are the others that come to mind. I'm not sure what to think of Buffalo just yet.

When you have a top defense, youre always in the game with a chance to win because the game is kept close. (see LSU) Hence: Defense wins championships.
I think its becuase in general, top defenses are more consitent than top offenses... meaning, its rare to see a D that usually only allows 13 ppg, turn around and allow 31. Top offenses on the other hand, are less consistent. They may score 38 points at home one game, and then run in to a defense that matches up better and only score 17 the next week on the road.
2006 playoffs in chicago are an example that comes to mind.
