...when dolphins show up, start the engine and go someplace else.
We were catching specs and a group of dolphins show up. We bitched a bit, but kept catching so decided to continue until we weren't getting anymore bites. Then they started getting more bold and gobbling up the undersized fish as we threw them back, right at the boat.
I took a borderline fish off my hook, hung my line over the side of the boat so I wouldn't snag anything on board while I measured my fish. After measuring my fish, I turned to grab my rig only to see it going over the side of boat, hooked to tail of a 7' long dolphin tearing arse across the marsh like a scalded dog.

Yep. Dolphins suck arse when it comes to fishing. I always move on to somewhere else when they show up

This is what cracks me up with the Feds - When you throw snapper back...guess who is eating them.
Anyway, dolphins suck arse when you are fishing.

I know, but it took us a couple hours to find fish, and when we did we were catching on every cast. Didn't want to let those bastards ruin it.

I caught a limit of te biggest trout I've ever caught this past summer with porpoises everywhere this past summer fwiw

Yeah, we were complaining that they showed up but since we were catching we put up with them. Never envisioned them getting so close they'd snag themselves on my empty hook hanging over the side of the boat.
Another thing they did was un-set our anchor. They were going up and down the anchor line, scratching their backs on the rope. Pulled the anchor loose a couple times and set us adrift...

we caught some nice trout in the midst of porpoises this summer in Grand Isle. They would come up to be fed, but were not aggressive. It was really strange, but they did not seem to drive off the fish.

Exact same thing happened to us in June. It was like throwing a dog table scraps when we released our undersized fish.

Dolphins--I hate them immensely as creatures and I catch a lot of flack for it. I think they are nasty.
Anyway, they can be good and bad. Good because they can push the trout into an area and stack them up. bad because they will sometimes spook a school. regardless, if they are present, there are usually fish around.

You see dolphins you know you have fish.

This.
They can be aggravating when your catching little trout. I have never had a problem with them when I am on a school of larger trout. I have seen times when they can help you locate schools when there are a lack of birds.

As long as they don't take your fish off your line they wouldn't bug me.
During salmon runs we have to deal with seals who will take the salmon right off your line as you fight them. They're protected too so you can't choot em.

They had no effect at all on us at GI in July. The bite continued as the dolphins were trying to be fed right by the boat.

I was fishing for bull drum with crabs one day and actualy hooked a dolphin. The fricker was jumping like a marlin and sucked all the line off my reel before I could do anything. Damn sure wish I could've unanchored and ran him down. Woulda been a hell of a fight

I've hooked my share of them in Grand Isle, but I've never had one stay with me longer then a minute. They spool you faster then lightning.
Posted on 9/21/11 at 1:25 pm to CajunFootball
It lasted maybe 30 sec. Thought I had a 100lb drum until the dolphin started jumping

Buddy of mine hooked one while reeling in a trout in Manilla Village. He fought that thing for a couple of runs but I told him the dolphin was just frickin with him cuz if he wanted to he would have spooled him in a heartbeat.
Flipper let go and he reeled the fish on in.

Same applies to sharks. Got swarmed by a bunch of black tips a few years ago, they were biting the specs in half as we were pulling them in.
