Former Big East Commish: People are not thinking about

the unintended consequences of expansion
This was on OTL just now on ESPN2
i fully agree. the ACC is the last major conference to expand in a big way, and they've become the 1st or 2nd worst BCS conference

there is no reason the Big 12 and Big East can't merge.
I truly hope the SEC stops at 14...

they increased their membership almost solely for football. look at the member schools and the CFB title game goal

i still think UT's best option is to have OU/OSU leave for the pac-x conference and orchestrate some newer/small schools to join (like houston, rice, smu, boise state, etc). they could keep the LNH and dominate over their minions like UT wants to do

Would be no worse then the current Big East.

I also agree with this. It would allow them to be basically independant, but have a home for their smaller schools.

exactly
keep LHN? check
make $18-20M per in a tv deal? check
keep a conference for logistics? check
dominate its conference? check
if UT wants to keep the LHN, this is the way to go

If UT wants to just do

it would be pretty awesome. such a dick move
esp if they recruit boise just to do it

All of this expansion is not good for the overall game of college football. It may mean more money for each school in the big conferences but this damages the game in my opinion. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to college football. It's the traditions that enrich this game and make it so much better to me than pro sports. I think the dollar signs are getting in the way of what has made the sport what it is.

I would laugh pretty hard. They'd be playing Tulame every week and people would be like "OHHHH UT IS SOO GOOD" and those stupid people would be swimming in profit.

yeah i bet they'd recruit one of:
ULL
La Tech
Tulane
why? WHY NOT

True. But their new conference probably won't strike a lucrative deal with the teams being thrown out there. In the long run, Texas's independent deal may not be much better than teams in the better conferences receive, unless Texas renogiates if the Big 12 falls apart. It may help them with overall exposure.

The problem would be keeping a BCS bid. They would need to keep the non-Oklahoma schools in, and add Boise and BYU and they would be set. They are not for adding all the SWC rejects, so I don't see them going for SMU, Houston, et al. Maybe TCU, if that ship hasn't sailed.
In fact, if they were to replace Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Colorado and Nebraska, with Boise, BYU, TCU and one other, say New Mexico or Colorado State, that wouldn't been too bad.

as long as Texas stays texas of 02-08, they'll be fine. esp if they snipe a boise

I'm not sure I'd count that as an unitended consequence. Certainly by adding Miami, VT and BC the ACC was hoping to improve as a FB conference, but expanding was not why it hasn't happened, basically Miami and FSU went in the tank. Purely coincdential to expanding the ACC.
Posted on 9/19/11 at 2:49 pm to SlowFlowPro
Boise should be lobbying hard for this. It would be their only prayer of playing in a BCS conference. UT would also let BYU have any kind of Mormon network they wanted as well and let them pretend to be independant.

That had more to do with Miami and FSU completely collapsing at the same time than anything inherantly wrong with expansion
