Looks they will have a forced hand before long. That would be the same problem Texas would have if it went Independent.

MAC makes the most sense for travel. Already with a bunch of MAC schools (Bowling Green, Western Michigan and Miami) in hockey.

Same for T-sips and C-USA.

A lot of folks are suggesting that this very issue may cause ND to join a conference as a full member (including football). If that happened, probably Big 10 but maybe ACC, Texas would join with them.

The other sports will go to the B1G, football will hold indy as long as possible.

They could join the Atlantic 10 or some other non-football D-I conference.

I don't think the B1G would want the other sports. They are not a conference that needs ND's name. Either come all the way or not at all. What do they bring to the table for other sports. I think they will not be invited to any bigger conference in other sports.

there are 16 teams in the big east right now.

16!

the conference will be sustained in some form.

The BIG will not allow this. ND would have to be all in or not at all.

The question is how important being a BCS football conference is to them. If UConn and Rutgers end up in the ACC too, what's left football-wise?

USF
WVU (SEC?)
Cincinnati
Louisville
TCU

If Big XII is left with:

Iowa State
Baylor
Kansas State
Kansas
Missouri (SEC?)

Does it make more sense to form a BCS-level football conference, leaving non-football schools behind?

notre dame is not in the conference for football, so unimportant?

its basketball and non-revenue sports were ND needs a home and there are other programs in the big east already who do not participate in big east football...

sure? but that does not impact notre dame because the other "non-football" schools will always be there.

Agreed, especially since a number of them don't have FBS football teams.

I was referring to importance to the Big East. If the Big East football schools are gone (football conference dissolves), what are you left with for non-football programs? Would the Big East even allow its football conference to fold?

To your point, if the Big East remains without football, is this enough for Notre Dame?

those other schools have to play somewhere too, right?

if its enough for them, it will be enough for notre dame. also, the A10 would gladly accept notre dame and another school to go 16, if the big east did fold (although i do not think it will).

as it stands right now, the big east losing two members has no impact on notre dame. "forcing notre dames hand" will come down whether or not 4 16 team super conferences are formed; and that just does not seem like a realistic scenario considering all the logistics involved.

They could call it the Catholic League. And it would be a good, solid hoops league, especially if they grab Xavier from the A-10.

Add Xavier, Dayton, Butler and that would be a good league!

This. The Big East FB conference may go away or become a non AQ conference in FB, but all the BB only schools are not going away

The football schools? My assumption is that they all want to be in a BCS conference. If the Big East folds its football part, I would expect those schools to play their other sports in whatever BCS conference they end up in.

... leaving the aforementioned non-football schools.

... which I'm gathering you're not only ok with, but maybe you were advocating in the first place?

I don't expect ND to ever give up football independence unless they can't get a favorable TV contract, which isn't happening anytime soon.

And if ND ever does fall to that point, no major conference will want them.
