What was up with receivers stopping three yards before the sticks on third downs in the State game? It was, like a broken record. JL would pass, receiver makes the catch, and we don't get the first down. Your left scratching your head saying wtf.

Same can be said of this thread. Let it go man. We are making strides in the passing game.

Two explanations for this that I can see. One is trying to let our athletes gain yardage on the run after the catch which they are capable of doing and the other is that they know a blitz is coming and you have to get the pass off quickly, another second of holding the ball could be disastrous.

Didn't LSU also have three passes short of the sticks in the Oregon game?

Route running and play design/execution are different things.

Sometimes the defense forces quick throws short of the first down.

If you question route running, watch Randle's double move TD again.

Dunno, you think maybe the DB knows also that you only need x amount of yards? All teams do this, if coverage is tight you break it off couple of yards short and try to get the extra on your on.

I think its a combination of the following:

1.) The defenders (DBs) know where the sticks are an they are going to defend that spot, which leaves our receivers with two options:
a.) Fake the cut in and run down field, or
b.) break the route off (before the sticks) and bail Lee out.

Our receivers are choosing "b" at the moment. And IMO that's an okay decision. It's conservative, but we can play conservative on offense with the type of defense we have. As the receivers gain more confidence and route precision we will see more stop and go's ("a"). I agree with what the other poster said here, they are "making strides" in the right direction.

All valid points. The receivers backs are to the quarterback so I highly doubt they know JL is about to get sacked. Gonzalez better get the chit corrected. Then again we have some true freshman running routes.

You can run after the catch I think. If you break it off at the sticks, you set yourself up for tight coverage and getting your route jumped.

Not saying we don't need to get past sticks more often, but there are valid reasons to believe we can get the first safely with YAC

I would make a very small wager (maybe not) that the receiver is running the route as designed. That is, a 6 or 7 yard route regardless of where the sticks are. He possibly won't be covered as closely plus the staff expects these guys to make plays after the catch (a.k.a.YAC).

Many years ago when I attended the ole war skule I knew a tight end who played for Cholly Mac and staff. This TE got graded down for doing just that; stretching the route to make a 1st down. In a game the ball was thrown to him, he made the 1st down, when he met with his position coach the following week expecting to be congradulated, he was reminded that the route should have been shorter. Graded down for it.

you spread the defense and try to create a situation that is one on one. a big part of our offense is running underneath.....very conservative, relying on the receiver to pick up more after the catch.

this also probably has to do with lee's past and the idea of taking care of the football. it is an element of the spread offense. mismatches over the middle. some routes by the receivers you can see have improved, like beckham's comeback where he went 12 yards deep instead of a yard short like against oregon.

beckham almost has more yards receiving than randle had as a freshman. this kid has done a nice job.

I don't think it is the receivers' faults. The coaches seem deathly afraid to let Lee throw the ball in obvious passing situations.
