I know Lion King is being re-released for 3D, but it had me thinking, there are a lot of good movies that people love that they never got a chance to see in the theater. I know some people hate the theater experience but i love it. If they re-released a movie like Top Gun(not in 3D) for two weeks, would the theaters not be packed? Maybe even launch a retro theater chain that re-released old movies.

Movies used to do this all the time before VCRs.

I agree with the premise.

I'ld pay cash money to see these movies in theaters again:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Back to the Future
Tombstone
The Exorcist
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Shining
Blade Runner
A Clockwork Orange

I'm sure Lucas and Speilberg have something special lined up for Raiders.

Theaters did this all the time when I was a youngster in the 70s.

Disney used to re-release older movies all the time in the theater.

Heck, smaller theaters in big cities do this all the time to make a living.

The Prytania Theater does this I think on weekends.

They should release it with free admission for everyone as an apology for the crystal skull.

Eta: fricking Lucas better not add anything!

there's several in ny that do this.

One is the BAM Rose theater (brooklyn academy of music).

I went and saw The Color of Money there since I'm a big fan of The Hustler and I never saw it in theaters since I was so young.

I think they were having a Paul Newman week or something at the time.

Great idea, I would love to go back and watch all of the original star wars movies in the theater.

If they re-released the trilogy over a few months, they would make a crap ton of money. I know I'd go see it in a heartbeat.

River Oaks theater has a midnight showing on Sat night of older movies. They are doing Jaws in a couple of weeks, i might go check it out.

They should re-release the unpopular ones.

There's a lot of good movies that most people have never seen.

Actually there are probably a bunch of movies that became cult classics that didn't do much in the theaters. Summer release of Sandlot? $$$$$$

Ever go to the Landmark on W Gray? On Fri and Sat sometimes they show old movies. This week is Quadrophenia.

I love seeing older movies in theaters. I think one of the biggest blown opprotunities of all time was not re-releasing 2001, in 2001.

sweet, I'll probably go to that as well. I haven't been there in a while, but have seen many there in the past stuff like Rear Window, Blazing Saddles, Clockwork Orange,

This was re-released in theaters nationwide about 10 years ago.

I've always wished I had the resources to open my own theatre just for this purpose. I would reserve one screen to show a classic movie (from any decade) each weekend. I can't imagine it would be that costly, but I really have no clue.

I miss the Saenger though. The summer classics they did every year was great

I know a lot of people hate the changes Lucas made to the Star Wars movies, but my Dad made sure he brought me to see them in theaters when they did the re-release. It was awesome to be able to see them on the big screen.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas occasionally do this.

Fantastic idea. Their calendar of events is online.
