Who is going and where?
Any Teal reports?
I'll be south of Kaplan and have heard mixed reports, but heard North LA was full of birds so hopefully they make it down by this weekend.

I am afraid that last rain might have spread them out too much. None the less, I will be out there!

+1...i really would hold off on hunting the new pup until big duck season...too big of a risk to take no matter where you are in LA IMO

Thanks for the heads up. We will be in small ponds that are less than a foot deep and we rarely see gators back in that area in the summer. But yea alot of my friends won't bring their dogs to their leases for teal either, but we have never had a problem.

have teal hunted every season since 78..... Have only seen or even actual had first had accounts of gator problems...
TWICE and one was the sheer stupidity of the dog owner..... and
the odds of even running into a gator in most of the places folks will be teal hunting in LA are low...especially in rice/crawfish country.

Will be in Venice at the camp starting Friday. Don't expect much after the storm surge but will hunt anyway and I know the fish will be good.
The to guy bringing his dog...
PLEASE DON'T!!! Why would you do something with a member of the family that you "cross your fingers". If there is a chance, it's not worth it. Dogs are great to hunt with, I have two but they don't hunt until November. I promise if something happens you will never forgive yourself.

My buddy has the lease and i talked to him today about it. He has a dog and he's bringing his as well. If there was a doubt about the safety of my dog he wouldn't /won't touch the water. I'll let him send his 110lb monster as a decoy. I'd never risk my dog's health or safety. The ponds are very small and only accessible by mud boat. It's generally to salty for gators where we hunt but your concerns are valid and noted. I

before the storm there were a ton of teal in the reggio delacroix area. I am not sure anymore.

nhass, you should always make your own decision about these things and do what's right.
However Salinity and pond size/depth should NEVER be used to determine if gators are in the area. I have filled 38 of my 47 tags this year on my lease near Venice. This year the gators have been in pockets and almost in West Bay. Meaning VERY salty water and very small ponds, using an air boat to get to them.
Good luck with your hunt this weekend.

Is a triscuit to a 10 foot gator. Not worth the risk IMO.

Doesn't mean anything. I wouldn't ever risk a dog during teal season. Can you imagine the horror if something actually happened? Is this a family pet?

A buddy's dog got hit by a gator from the launch last year... you have to know your area. We have a ton of them
I won't make the opener due to kid stuff and JOURNEY but have hunted my dog during teal season.
If you are in a small pond and are very aware, you will be ok. Also, you must have a good dog. Generally, the gators will make a move to the duck and you will see it happen.

on any given day in any parish more dogs are killed by vehicles than gators, snakes and fish kill in a year....
heck I have seen killed in bonne carre while being trained 2 hit by truck - one hit by dirt bike.

Made 4 dove hunts last weekend, but I am still considering making the drive to a lease near the Lacassine Wildlife Refuge. Anyone have any reports on bird activity for the SW part of the state?

I'll be hunting a lease in that same area this weekend. Supposedly lots of birds.
Lots of birds in the burns too and around sweetlake from other reports I've heard.
