It seems like conferences are going to be shaped because of money and power, which will lead to a couple of conferences holding all of the power. That doesn't seem fair to me or the right way to go about making things an equal playing field for most Div. 1 teams.

I don't think it is right that the SEC, Pac 12 and B1G should be able to grab all the good teams, and then let the lesser teams fall to the ACC and Big East. It will look weird to have all these power teams lumped in to just three conferences and then having one or two really weak conferences.

I think the NCAA should step in and act like the NFL, NBA or MLB and assign teams to a conference. I'm not sure how they would do it, but it is just a thought.

Huh?

When has there been an even playing field in college football?

Big schools with giant stadiums and hundreds of millions of dollars invested in football will never be on equal footing with teh midmajors and small time BCS schools with less invested

So what should be the cutoff? I guess NCAA football will always be a mess and there is no fixing it.

It would never work. If the NCAA tried, you'd see a mass exodus of schools withdrawing from the NCAA and forming another association to play in. The NCAA can't even remotely risk that. It's much different from high school athletics where the states hold the purse strings and can regulate districts, divisions, etc. At the end of the day, there is so much money involved with the major division 1 universities that they are going to do whatever is best for them.

Maybe the answer, for football only, is for everyone to be an independent, select their own schedules & do their own TV deals, and then for an 8 team championship tournament to be put together from a BCS type ranking (with S.O.S. included) of all teams.

This way, everyone preserves the rivalries which mean so much to them and schools with more resources no longer have to shoulder the burden for inferior schools.

what mess are you talking about? There's not this giant pile of money out there that the "big" schools have aquired by killing the unicorn. They created the money over time by building a product people want.

You mean that mess we keep spending all of our money and time on because we enjoy it so much? Imagine how much better our lives would be without the NCAA.

Should the NCAA Assign Teams to Conferences?

No, that's a job for congress. I think a fair result would come from a committee chaired by Charles Shumer.

a couple of conferences do hold the money and power. one conference is dominating the rest in football. its going to be like that until a school that is not in the SEC steps up and beats a SEC team in the National Title Game. The NCAA is not going to step in and break up the SEC or Big 10+2 or the PAC 12 and they arent going to save the Big9

I think you're a big fan of big government, because that's the same mentality in looking to the government in surrendering power to them, I never have understood why people really just here freedom and liberty so much. ALL have very good reasons though, but also NEVER consider the consequences.

WHY would you want to surrender to a governing power like the NCAA? Can't we just let schools form allegiances with whomever they choose to within a very basic structure without the NCAA dictating who they play, as if they were even formed for such a purpose?

what do you think gives the ncaa that kind of authority?
4 16 team super conferences could seceed from the ncaa and form their own org.
