Wake Forest

Hey guys, I don't post much but I kinda wanted to chime in on this debate.
What about Wake Forest? Hear me out. I don't, by any means, think they are high profile program, but they are usually solid in basketball and somewhat decent in baseball.
Based on different radio programs I've heard I believe South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia won't sign off any possibilities coming from out of their state so that would count out Florida State, Clemson, and Georgia Tech. South Florida would be unlikely too.
I've also heard the idea of Virginia Tech. While great on paper, I know that the brass at Virginia pulled a lot of strings to get them into the ACC a decade ago so it would be hard to get them out. They're more of a package deal. The same can be said of UNC and Duke. NC State would, too, be out I believe in that case.
With that being said that leaves three markets. Kansas City, DC, and Charlotte. DC, while great, is too far north and with VA Tech being an issue I don't see it happening. Maryland, maybe? Unlikely IMO. Missouri in the KC market would be solid, but I don't think it makes sense geographically and would prove difficult to re-align the divisions. That leaves Charlotte, IMO. Wake, like I said, is good at other sports and would benefit us in the sense of going into that market not only for football but other sports as well.
Sorry for the long post. That's just my two cents. I could be really wrong and off base, but I don't think the choice, if there is one, will be someone everybody thought. Thanks.

Wake Forest is a shittier version of Georgia Tech.

they have a kid named nikita whitlock that was voted the number one defensive player in Texas 5A in 2009....but, that's it. kid was amazing and lit up every game but the state champ game against Katy. He was like 5'8" though, so that's why he ended up at Wake.

I think everyone is looking at this from a purely football perspective. It's not based on just that. It's also based on location and market. The SEC doesn't have any teams in North Carolina. They have talent there in all three big sports. It would be a good way to channel that market. Like I said in my OP, I know WF isn't a marquee program, but they offer more in other sports kinda like Vandy does. It would elevate SEC basketball IMO.

Those that are looking purely football are missing the point - which is markets/TV/$$ and getting out in front in the race to 16 team "superconferences".

I think the "tied together" thing is mostly BS. If we could get by our clusterfrick legislature and separate from Texas, anyone can if they truly want to.

That's exactly my point. SEC wants a new market to dive into. Geographically speaking, North Carolina makes the most sense. UNC, Duke, and NC State are the least likely to leave the ACC from that state. WF is probably a longshot, if we wanted them, but they make sense IMO.

to some degree, having a team such as Wake, could potentially do the same thing that aTm will do in the state of Texas.
It's not 'the' school in the state according to some, but some Student-Athletes would begin picking the SEC school in the state, over the 'The' school, such as UT, or in this case, UNC/Duke/NCState..

however, that whole 31,500 seat stadium they have, that's gonna be a huge hurdle for them. i think Alex Box may seat that many....lol.

Haha true but they would be able that up pretty quick with the SEC yearly payouts.

WF would not be my first choice, but I don't think it is a horrible idea.
The disadvantages are obvious: small school with a small fanbase and a low-profile sports program.
That being said, there are numerous advanatages: would expand the SEC footprint into North Carolina for both recruiting and television markets. They are an outstanding academic institution that would help the academic prestige of the SEC. It actually wouldn't be that bad to get another easy win for football. Vandy and Ole Miss need some company in the cellar and we don't need to keep adding killer programs that are going to make it significantly tougher for the Big Six to get their championships.
For the same reasons I think NC State makes more sense than Wake (plus they seem to "fit" better). Not sure Wake or NC State is more likely to leave (I assume UNC and Duke are complete pipe dreams b/c they are the heart and sould of the ACC).

This is why I felt NC State would be a good addition. The Charlotte market is desirable and it makes sense geographically to have a school in North Carolina. Of course, UNC would be first choice, but you aren't getting them. They are the ACC IMO. Wake would be probably not be a good addition simply because they are a basketball school that sells their players on playing basketball in the ACC. Their hoops program would prolly take a MAJOR step down and I can't envision them every being a consistent football program.

I was thinking NC State originally. I just felt they were more tied to UNC than Wake was/is. I'd definitely take them. I think they are better suited for the SEC.
If we can get into the Charlotte market regardless I think it's a win-win.
