Why did the Cowboys become "Americas team?"

I understand why the Braves got that designation as they were the only team nationally televised on a regular basis for a while. But dont understand the Cowboys.

Because some idiot at NFL Films thought it up and it stuck.
Edit: Oh you meant why are they loved not why are they called that. It's because the NFL films guy noticed the cowboys always had more fans in opposing stadiums than other teams did. As to why that was it's all speculation.

The same way USL became University of Louisiana? If you keep saying stupid shite enough, people eventually play along?

I was under the impression that polling results showed they had the most fans....therefore, "America's Team."

Great franchise with a classy/iconic coach and an All-American Boy at qb. Factor in a trendy stadium and that Texas star...it all makes sense.
Pittsburgh and Oakland are proud franchises, but too blue collar to want that sort of limelight back then and appreciate it. Ditto for Green Bay.

You haters can blame Tex Schramm. Give him credit. Dallas had some good teams in those days but it's not like they had a ton of titles.

NFL films was making a highlight reel in 1978 entitled America's Team. They actually asked the Steeler's to be the focus of that documentary, to be called america's team, but Art Rooney refused.
So NFL films got their second choice, the Cowboys... and the name stuck

Right...but they were constantly in the big games. Yeah, they only had 2 Super Bowl titles...but they had 5 NFC Titles. The Cowboys dominance went on for a while. They were solid for more than a decade...late 60's and into the 80's they were at the top.
Other teams can't say the same, with few exceptions.

I interpreted his statement to mean that they didn't have an outlandish number more than anybody else. But yeah, good point.

Now Days I'd just say Fans.
Even if they aren't as great as they used to be, you still see a shite load of Cowboys fans. When I was in Middle school it was like everyone was a fricking cowboys fan.
I understand the Braves TV Situation, but i think now days there are far more Yankees and Red Sox fans around America.

They had 2. 71 and 77.
The Steelers had 4 in the 70s, and the Packers already had 2

Dallas had already been in what 4 or 5 sb during this time. They have played in 9 SB and probably 13 NFC title games? No one else has those kind of numbers

Their first Title was their 2nd Trip to the super Bowl.
Their 2nd title was their 4th trip.
Pitt had been to the same amount at the end of the 70s and won more.
All time Dallas has been to 8 SBs (So has Pitt)
Dallas has been to 14 NFC title games (winning 8)
Pitt has been to 15 AFC Title Games (winning 8)
During the 70s
Pitt was in 6 AFC Title games, Dallas was in 7 NFC Title games.
Really no difference.
Pitt just won more Super Bowls.
I do feel dallas gained a lot more fans in the 90s though.
(As the steelers/Pats are doing for the younger kids now)
