Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds told the American-Statesman that it appeared to him that the Aggies are poised to leave the Big 12. Another well-placed Big 12 school administrator called the decision "nothing more than a formality."

"I don't think A&M has thought through this thing with all its long-term ramifications," said the administrator, who was heavily involved in last year's negotiations that kept the Big 12 relatively intact. "I think they let their anger make this decision.

"In the Big 12, they're one of the three big dogs. I don't see them in the top three in the SEC. If anything, I think they'd be in the bottom three."

The Aggies have declined to comment, but others are reacting swiftly to counter the possibility that the Big 12 could lose another powerful member just one year after Nebraska and Colorado bolted for the Big Ten and Pac-12, respectively.

Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe was unavailable for comment Friday. There were unconfirmed reports that SEC presidents will meet this weekend to discuss inviting A&M to join the league, along with possibly Florida State. SEC spokesman Charles Bloom told the American-Statesman he couldn't comment on the reports.

Dodds said he thinks the Big 12 can survive with as few as nine teams but added that his staff has aggressively begun to research as many as 20 teams as possible replacements for A&M.

"I think nine's an option," Dodds said. "I think nine are solid. I think 10's a good number. I've always liked 10. In my mind, we'd try to stay at 10. If we had to, we'd go to 12."

The Big 12 school official said the league would consider Notre Dame, Brigham Young and Air Force.

"Notre Dame needs to be in a conference at some point, and they might even be able to keep their TV deal with NBC," the source said. "I think BYU and Air Force would both jump at the chance."

An Air Force spokesman declined to comment. Calls to BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe were referred to the school's sports information department.

And Miss State.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this from all of the Arky and SCAR fans, but I'd put them on the same level as those two schools.

Every single fanbase in college football is united in this belief but aggie is acting out a tantrum right now. Marsha got asked out by the most handsome guy in school and Jan is furious. Now the politicians are involved. I hope aggie goes & takes the okies or Mizzou with them so the Big 12 blows up and Texas can go to greener pastures. Still, Monday & Tuesday will be veeeeeeeery interesting.

Note Dame to the Big 12 is just funny. Big 10 is the ONLY place Notre Dame will go.

and they would be right.

Arkansas has beaten A&M head to head the last two years, one year was close but the other by 4 or 5 Tds.

South Carolina was in the SECCG, last year. Since '95- Texas A&M has one bowl victory.
South Carolina has twice that just against Ohio St.

Dr D, Texas has such a sweet deal if they stay in a smaller Big '12.'

STAY AT NINE, AND STAY PUT.

At that point, beat OU, and you're in the BCS. That's it.

Not only that, but all signs point to the Cotton Bowl being part of the next BCS contract--I'm sure the tie-ins will be shuffled a bit. I really think UT needs to sit back and let all of it happen; all they need is eight teams in their current conference, and they're home free for as long as they want.

In the Outback bowl with Steve Bellasari at QB.

Not knocking it, but I wouldn't hang your hat on it.

He does not even realize he just insulted his own school.

But ok.

Big 12 screwed up last year when all of this happened. They should have jumped on TCU, Boise St, Utah and BYU. Lets face it their conference is dying the only teams they are going to convince is non-BCS schools. Notre Dame is not joining a conference unless forced to do so.

What greener pastures? In any other conference, Texas wouldn't be the big bully. Do you think the Big 10 teams like Michigan, Penn State and Ohio state will kiss Texas's butts like Baylor does?
Do you believe that USC, UCLA, Oregon will bend over for Texas?
Dayummm I thought Gump delusion was bad.

i dont think the Aggies will be terrible in the SEC.. it might take them a few years to get used to the level of coaching, defense and competitiveness on a weekly basis in the SEC, but its not like they have been losing to bad SEC teams.. LSU was very good last year and Arkansas went to a BCS bowl..

BYU just went the independent route...doubt that they'd jump into a conference at this point. Especially one with a member as insufferable as Texas seems to be.

I agree with this.

While A&M would initially get the snot beaten out of them like the new kid at fight club, they would toughen up soon. I expect they will end up on par with Arky and SC. ...The problem is that right now Arky thinks they are joining the elite.

And their school in the process but I see how you missed it. So he must think A&M is top three and Texas and Oklahoma are top two. Does not say a lot for the team if they are playing in such a weak conference in his opinion.

taking Boise offers nothing and in a half competitive conference they loses at least 2 or 3 games

Yeah but they went the Indy route to give them a better shot at the BCS because their conference was losing Utah and TCU along with their slim chance at becoming a BCS conference. They weren't getting in to the Pac-10 and the Big 12 looked like it was breaking up so they did the smartest thing possible. Going to the Big 12 would be a smart move for them I think. They would compete immediately in the Big 12 and actually have a legitimate shot at the BCS that they arent even guaranteed currently as an Indy. They aren't going to get that same sweetheart deal as ND anytime soon so this would be a good deal for them imo.
