yeah you're right. a fricking batman movie hasn't had a chance to progressively build a fan base.
Batman is really something that almost solely Americans enjoy, so it doesn't stand a chance in hell of breaking the Worldwide box office.

I don't think The Hobbit has nearly the same amount of interest level and appeal to the casual movie-goer (those that aren't huge fans of the Tolkein books or haven't read them) as the Harry Potter movies do.
All 8 of the Harry Potter movies had a bigger opening weekend than the final LOTR movie.

That beats the previous best opening weekend of $158.4 million, also held by Warner Bros. for 2008's Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight"

Anyone have any idea how much the main kid in these movies has made off of this series?
He supposedly makes $24 million a movie now. One of the British newspapers estimated his net worth at close to $80 million US.
I watched a biography on the main characters (from 2007). Radcliffe made $500,000 in the first movie and of course has increased his take over time. The biography said he made $16 million for Order of the Phoenix and stood to make $50 million for Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows 1 & 2. Not sure if any of that has changed in four years, but $80 million seems about right.

No chance The Hobbit takes down Deathly Hallows.

No, he's talking about the fact that Batman is one of the most popular fictional characters and has been around for 70 years.

I dont understand where a lot of people are getting there numbers/opinions on here. If we are talking just opening weekend, than maybe the hobbit and TDKR wont match HP7.5. But I fully expect after the movies runs there course, that both will amount to more than HP7.5.

People need to stop getting strung up on the domestic box office. Who cares how much it makes in a single location? They care how much they make total, as in world wide. DH Part 2 will certainly be the highest grossing Potter film, and it may not beat TDK domestically, but its a safe bet it will surpass it worldwide, and TDK just barely passed the Billion Dollar Market.

hell, according to your charts, when adjusted for inflation since 1977, Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters beat all LOTR films.
The all time champ is still Gone With the Wind.

Not true. But that was the most requested movie at the time, when rural Theaters would only take a movie that they knew would take in money.
And there were hundreds of movies made back then, but most, as it is today, were crap. So their runs were not long. If a theater couldn't make money on it, they got rid of it. Today the theaters will keep a piece of shite for weeks.

$50 mil total for the 3?
It seems like with Tom Cruise and TOm Hanks and those guys making like $20 mil per film, that dude(whatever his name is lol), should have gotten wayyyyyy more for these last couple of movies, cause those movies were guaranteed to be some of the best grossing movies of all time.

Wait, what? 1939 is widely considered by some to be the greatest year in American cinema.

Technically yes, but the final movie did not open on a Friday. It did make 125 million from its opening through Sunday.

and with all the buzz just over pictures peter jackson is putting out I think the hobbit will make close to 200 million opening. I can't wait for the official trailer which will make the buzz is more compelling.

Lol @ The Hobbit making more opening week than the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Because Lord of the Rings is more popular than Harry Potter, amirite?

This thread is about opening weekends.
And at a LOTR fanboy bringing up fanboys getting excited. LOTR how almost as bad fanboys as Star Trek.
And in the words of Randall: There is only one Return, and it's not of the King, it's of the Jedi.
All time box office receipts - Adjusted for Inflation
15 Return of the Jedi Fox $739,307,000 $309,306,177 1983^
51 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King NL $483,689,800 $377,027,325 2003

No one is comparing TDK w HP 7.5. 7.5 will beat TDK and then TDKR will beat it. All of this is worldwide
