there are several posts have him there. I think watching them both, Faneca was the better of the 2. Mawae was also right there.

They both were dominant guards.
Eric Andolsek was certainly at least in the sopme conversation regarding guard play as Alan Faneca.

No one has mentioned Roy "Moonie" Winston. He was an All-America guard at LSU back when you played both ways. He was totally dominant as a LB where he palyed about 12 years for the Minnesota Vikings where he started in 2 Super Bowls and played in many All Pro games in the NFL.

Tommy Casonova Safety. The younger folks here don't really know just how good he was. His football instincts were off the chart.

Jimmy Taylor at fullback
Nacho Albergamo-center
George Bevan-linebacker
George Rice -DT
Billy truax-TE
Andy Hamilton-WR, nobody make more big plays
Bert Jones-QB, although I loved Tommy Hodson
Johnny Robinson, as far as an athlete, probably only behind PP at DB and Cannon at RB, hell of a player

The only reason Johnny Robinson was not a 2 or 3 time All American at LSU is because in those days they picked only 11 and the better offensive players were always put on the team ahead of defensive players.
Johnny in his day was one of the top defensive players in the nation.

A unanimous choice would be a player that EVERYONE has agreed is the best at a position. A consensus choice would be a player that MOST have agreed is the best at a position.

Corey Webster needs some more run on here.
Also I'd put Royal ahead of LaFleur.

Didn't read every post, but wouldn't we have to say that Billy Cannon has to be the best RB in LSU history?
And I see everyone saying Tommy Banks, but I think Quinn Johnson was better than Banks, although everyone loved Banks more.

Thank you Webster, but A.) that's not the question in this thread...and B.)There is no such thig as "unanimous" on the rant!
Come on, you know that!

OK...not taking away ANYTHING from Billy Cannon. I think he is one of the all time greats at LSU...maybe even the best.
BUT...The Heisman does not necessarily crown him as the consensus best RB to ever play at LSU for one reason only. Politics...It's a popularity contest with ridiculous criteria that is voted on by the media.
My point being, that we have had players in the past (Stovall, Faulk, etc.) that could have possibly won the trophy, but didn't due to the media's love for another player.

best in their eras, it's just not fair to compare them to the more modern players. I mean you are talkin about players of different sizes, huge men today that run faster than most of those guys from that era!

I agree...but that's not the purpose of this thread. The purpose is to figure out who are the players that the whole LSU fan base can collectively say WITHOUT A DOUBT that [enter name here] was the best [enter position here] to ever play at LSU.
If there is debate, then there is NO consensus!
So far this is what we've come to...
FB-Jimmy Taylor
G-Alan Faneca
DT-Glenn Dorsey
CB-Tommy Casanova
LB-Michael Brooks
Posted on 7/8/11 at 2:21 pm to TXGunslinger10
I like big Leonard Mrshall over Dorsey like someone mentioned earlier!
