Pinto beans
Field peas
Black-eyed peas
What's your favorite seasonings and/or additions to them?
I'm making pinto beans as a side tonight so that one is most relevant.
TIA and eat well!

Chopped onion & one of these meats: bacon, crumbled-up breakfast sausage, diced ham or diced smoked sausage.

I made some flash frozen pinto beans a few nights ago. This is first time I've cooked those. I used bacon, onions, garlic and jalapeno. The seasoning was Bodacious BBQ Pinto Bean Seasoning which is really good. It can be ordered online if you're a big pinto bean fan.
For other beans, I use ham, ham bone and or bacon with onions, garlic, sometimes, and S&P. I don't like to put too many flavors in those because I really like the flavor of the fresh beans. Usually, I'm cooking purple hull (add some jalapeno, sometimes, to those), lady cream peas, baby limes, speckled butter beans or other summer beans that I keep in the freezer.
I'm going to try the smoked turkey, though, soon. I've never done that and it sounds very good.
Forgot to add that I usually use chicken stock rather than water.

Turkey? The flavor of nothing is going into your beans unlesss that stuf is smoked. Hocks and bacon are the thing for your field peas and black-eyes, pintos are for a thng called chili.

Very smoked.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I can now tell what things are common and what aren't. Just now getting to be a big bean fan.

You'll be hanged around these parts for putting beans in chili.

I don't think I've put/bought beans in chili for over a decade.

So you like your pintos refried.

Many folks have suggested using smoked turkey in peas/beans. I don't think plain old turkey would do anything.

The only way a true southerner seasons anything...with hog fat!

Good sleep inducing agent is about the only thing. Turkey, it is whats for T'day, and a pot of gumbo for the next day.

bacon, ham hocks, pickled pork all work well. Go easy on the bacon or it takes over.

Actually, I despise chicken unless it's covered in a sauce, fried or maybe smoked and I still don't like it all that much.
I like turkey very much. It actually has flavor to me. I like it roasted, smoked or fried. Thanksgiving dinner is one of my all time favorite meals.
