It could be a primetime sport in the USA if there was more scoring. I was talking about this with a friend of mine and he thought they should get rid of the goalie. I was trying to explain to him that that would just change the nature of the game to much, besides goal keeping is one of the most interesting parts of the game. But what if they just made the goals bigger? At least in Major League Soccer games played in the U.S. You could make them big enough that maybe a combined 10 goals are scored in an average game. Professional soccer is never going to gain traction in the US when the average game ends with a score of 2-1,2-0,or 1-0.

I'd rather it grow slowly and steadily. As I pointed out in this thread, MLS average attendance already exceeds the NHL and NBA. It should go even higher once San Jose gets a better stadium. MLS games are fairly entertaining, and need to continue to build a grassroots following. I'd rather they do that than try to change the nature of the game in any significant way in the name of gaining fickle followers.

Average NFL Score: 21-17

Approximately 3-2.5

Average football score typically varies in the

2.5-1 range.

Not too much difference

soccer is almost guaranteed to gain a significant amount of traction in the next few years. you can blame the mexican invasion. though, i don't think that it hasn't gained traction already.

anyway, MLS has been pushing for a more attacking league:

quote:

TSG: Let me ask you a question from when Don Garber spoke last year during the week prior to the MLS Cup. He said that there were foreign consultancy groups reviewing MLS and that there were certain incentives for teams that played attacking football or an offensive style. Would those comments, sort of, fall under things that you work on and reflect on that statement if you would.

Alfonso Mondelo: Well certainly, in regards to the offense, that comes from our reviews of the game and looking at what the trends are in MLS. Perhaps what our deficiencies are compared to some of the other top leagues in the world. Also in looking at what things we need to grow as league. And as I’m sure you’ve heard the commissioner say many times, he wants this league to be the most attacking league in the world. And we always compare ourselves to the rest of the top leagues in the world and where we’re lacking in MLS and where we need to improve.

Soccer isn't broken.

No need to "fix it."

So then what would the point be of having forwards or even a midfield for that matter???

The game would turn into a "kick the ball as long as you can and hope it goes in" match and that would get boring really fast.

Changing the rules simply to create more scoring just makes each goal less meaningful, on top of just being fricking stupid.

If more scoring makes a sport more popular, why isn't the Arena Football League gaining ground on the NFL?

dumb to soccer fans but ask the regular sport fan in the US what is wrong with soccer and they will say its boring with the main reason being low scoring

I imagine soccer in the U.S. would lose more fans than it would gain by implementing any of the measures you suggest in your OP.

soccer in america doesn't really need their support, and soccer elsewhere certainly doesn't need their support.

if they don't find the sport enjoyable, that's fine, but it doesn't need to change for them. i find most football, baseball, and basketball games boring, but it would be stupid for me to expect their governing bodies to change their rules to appeal to me.

at the end of the day, they are all just ball games. who really gives enough of a shite to want to change a game dramatically to have it appeal to them?

"soccer could change one thing, and i would watch it all of the time."
"i know. i would have so many sports to watch that i wouldn't do anything but watch sports, then."
"that would be awesome."

Explain this hotshot.

How do you expect the US to form a competitive international program on all levels (The U's to senior level) if the American league is promoting rules that are drastically different than what everyone else in the world has been accustomed to since the 1800's????

the regular sports fan in America is the fickle sonofabitch that will leave "his team" the second they suck

the reason they say it is boring is because they are ignorant

look, I love the NFL, but this is a 60 minute game played in 5 second spurts with 2-3 minutes of nothing in between, so I ask how is a game that has constant movement and action is boring compared to that?

any soccer fan will tell you that they HATE when the back line will kick the ball around for 10 minutes

You're right. Let's make the holes in golf bigger, too. More holes in one! Yay!

While we're at it, let's make the football fields shorter, the basketball hoops bigger, and let every team everywhere start with 25 points, regardless of sport. More scoring = more awesomeness, for sheezy.

The "regular sports fan" in America still isn't fed up with two hours of commercials in a three hour time span.

The "regular sports fan" still watches Sportscenter to see what TO tweeted about whatever it is TO tweets about, or to see Ed Werder sleeping in a van outside Brett Favre's house instead of showing actual highlights.

Arena and CFL >>>>>>> NFL

I almost think that non-soccer fans in the U.S. don't really dislike soccer because of the low scoring but for some other reasons that they cannot articulate or would rather no say so they fall back on the "low scoring" complaint.

I don't claim to be a hotshot on any subject especially not soccer, never played the game ever but do greatly enjoy watching the world cup every 4 years when it comes around. 1-0 games at that level aren't boring to me at all and are in fact quite dramatic.

By making it a popular professional sport in the U.S that the average sports fan will get into.

It's a lack of understanding of the game. If you don't know WHY the guy is trying to hit the 60 yard cross to switch, then it just looks like a guy kicking it across the field. God forbid the wing misplay the ball.

"That guy kicked it all the way across the field, and the other guy just let it go out of bounds."

They don't see that the back on that side is too far up the field, and if the wing controls it properly, he's in.
