I'm about to start construction on one in my backyard, if you have one post pictures of yours. I'm going to do a version of the coop in the link, but decorated like an old New Orleans shotgun, and painted in purple and gold.

My dad started raising some last year, cool little dudes.

Plus it is great to go out in the morning and get a couple for jambalaya later in the day . Makes a world of difference.

My mom has 10 and gets 8-9 eggs a day. Make sure the there is an area for them to shite that is removable. Otherwise you will be cleaning it very often. The eggs have much more flavor than normal eggs. They are delicious.

One thing about the coop, you must have an area for them to roost at night along with nesting boxes. I have 7 hens and 3 nesting boxes which they will use all 3 at the same time some times.

The area under were the roosting is done, put wire. They shite that asses off in that area.

I was thinking about doing a removable box in that area.......

Slick, when are you getting your chickens? I ordered some the other day and they should be arriving on the 19th.

Post a pic when you get a chance, would like to see.

Where did you order yours from? I was gonna get some off of Craigslist, but I have to finish fencing my yard first.

The hen house looks pretty rough. Made out of scrap wood I found in the barn and painted with some bright red paint I found in there too. I have posts up for a 20X20 yard for them, with a hen house in the middle. Not really like a coop from the ppl on back yard chickens.

I ordered mine from Meyer Hatchery........You can probably do just as fine ordering off of Craigslist. The only reason I ordered from an actual hatchery was so I could have the chickens vaccinated. From what I gather you can do this yourself, but since I'm only ordering a handful it didn't seem like it was worth it to order everything to do that.

There is also a hatchery near Gulfport, Ms you can order from, however they don't offer vaccinations.

I agree with getting them from a hatchery. I raised anywhere from 200-1000 chickens a time from 2004-2009.

I would not trust cl. Too easy to introduce disease into your flock.

Chickens are a fricken mess and they stink. We have a small coop, probably 10 ft long x 3 ft wide x 3 ft tall that a friend made. It is above the ground and movable. We only have 3 hens in there. We got "pip pips" last easter for lil spicy, but the neighbors dog somehow broke the door and ate the pips...

I used shovel the poop and mix it with dirt and put it in my flower bed, makes for some damn good fertilizer

I raised 16 chicken for 4-H in a storage closet in my Garage. It was cool, because I raised them inside and in an urban enviroment. And yet got 1st place in Jefferson Parish and 8th in the State. Had 16 in 24 square feet. Kinda cramped. but took care of them well. Miss the eggs. Sold all of them to a guy at a feed shop.

put wheels on 1 end so you can roll it to different areas of the yard/into the shade.
