Oh ok. I thought you were talking about some of my buddies.

I buy my chicks from Fazzio's every year. Always get a good colection of healthy chics.

chickens are interesting to raise, but they are some nasty bastards...put the coop as far from your house as you can manage and be damn sure that you have a predator-proof place for them to sleep...

as for the chicks, don't frick with anything fancy....just go down to the local co-op or feed store and pick up a few....

This is what we have. There is a draw bridge type ladder to go up to the roosting/ laying area.

We rigged a dog bowl for water and a coffee can for food.

Sadly the one on the right died last week. I assume it got too hot or mites made it sick. She had stopped eating. That morning she was in the laying box and looked up at me, by noon she wasnt moving and laid out.

my neighbor's coop is exactly like that, but has wheels on 1 end to pull in addition to picking up both ends. He just rolls it on top of ant piles, army worms, dead squirrels, etc.....nice stuff. And yeah, the heat will definately kill them.

yea the boards on the side actually have gaps as well as between the roof and floor and the drawbridge stays opened most of the time.

I have been wanting to put some wheels on it, but havent gotten around to it yet.

Get the Easter Egg Chickens ....they lay blue or green eggs usually and the chickens are very hardy.

Seems quite a bit crampy to me. Chickens like to run some and flap their wings. I know one CAN get by with limited space but that's too confined imo.

I was reluctant to post a pic of mine cause I haven't used it in over 5 years and it needs new doors but what the hell.

Oh, and I know it's on the other end of the spectrum as I tend to overkill when I do things but it's because I always look for salvage value. I ask myself how can I build "it" so if I ever, for example, quit raising chickens, can use it for other things.

We ended up raising 4-H Show Goats and I used that structure to bring them up close to check throughout night when we were kidding.

In the bottom pic you can see the hatch I could open if I wanted to let them out for even more range. To the right I had a couple of 2X4's they would roost on and a ladder for them to walk up to lay even though they could get up without it most used it.

This is a BIG NO NO! Reason its a no no is that when you have to get into the coop, you will have to walk thru shite, That is not the bad part. Once the birds are in the pen, after a couple months, they will eat all grass and you will have nothing but mud and shite. Now throw in one good rain and you have one hell of a mess! Once the birds start laying, you have to go and walk thru that mess every day to get the eggs.

Put your coop on the outside wall of your pen along with the nesting boxes on the back side of your coop to were you don't have to go inside the coop every day.

I want to build a portable coop, that I can drag around the pasture. I'm guessing big enough for 10-15 birds. How much room does a chicken need? I was thinking of framing it up with some tubing so I can hook the tractor to it and drag it. I'm thinking 20'x20' about 7' tall covered with some shade cloth, and then the "laying house" on one end.

I fenced half of my chicken yard in this weekend. May finish it this week. I ordered the McMurray catalog and may order from them. I was not aware of the dangers of buying from CL.

Full sized hens will need approximately two square feet of personal space and an additional three square feet or so of yard space to run around in. Its always best to give your flock more space than required.

Chickens can be down right mean to each other, especially in crowded conditions. There is always a “low man on the pole” the bird all the chickens like to peck at or bully, this is where the term “hen pecked” comes from. Giving the chickens extra space to run away from tormentors is a good idea. Having an outside chicken run attached to the hen house is a wonderful way to give the birds extra space.
