Looking for a solid introductory bow for an adult. Haven't made up my mind yet between recurve and compound. I'd like something I can use for deer and rig for fishing, too. Trying to keep it under $300.

And what shops around here are good for bows and accessories?

Don't use one bow for hunting & bowfishing. Bowfishing puts alot of wear & tear on a bow. Go to a local pawn shop & buy something cheap for bowfishing or ever check ebay. I use an Oneida bow for bowfishing & love it. Can be found on ebay for $100. A hunting rig needs to stay a dedicated hunting rig. This way you are not constantly changing rest, sights, etc.

Good Luck!

Ok I'll focus on a hunting bow for now then. And I live in Denham, but I work in BR, so places in/around either are good. I'm leery about Bass Pro b/c I know how overpriced their guns are.

Are there any brands or models I should avoid? Any most of you would recommend specifically?

Bowies doesn't sell used. you might be able to get a lower end Bear package from there but $300 is pushing it for a new bow. Definitely go used, check the archerytalk.com classifieds, a lot of those people buy new bows every year and fairly new models can be had for cheap.

The OB has got to be my favorite board!
Helpful information, no bow brand pissing contest, Just good people!

ETA: Oh... and Louisiana Sportsman has some online classified adds for people trying to sell used bows. Some are trying to upgrade to the new models, some are getting out of the sport, mostly good deals.

Biggest thing to focus on is not the name or the speed, but the fit & feel of the bow. You can have the best name, fastest shooting bow but if it doesn't fit you correctly or does not feel good, you will have much less enjoyment/success.

I started with a used Diamond Black Ice & love it. Diamond has "The Rock" & a few others close to your range new. That being said, shoot the fit/feel, not the brand.

Chappy, do you have any pics of it? What kind of condition? A lot of shooting done on it? I'm around 5'8, 5'9 myself, so it might be a good fit.

The old man bought a 2009 Diamond "The Rock" as a Christmas gift for me this past year. It was on closeout, so it was marked down to $499, or something around that price, but he purchased it through Hunter's Friend. Living in Kansas, you practically have to hunt with a bow or black powder because the modern firearms season lasts only 12 days at the beginning of December. I've never hunted with a bow before, but I've always heard it's addicting and most hunters prefer to bow hunt once they get started with it--that is, if they don't get discouraged and hang it up.

I will try and post some pics. It is basically in perfect condition. I bought it the year after it came out, on sale at Bowie's. I had some friends who told me they would have a place for me to hunt, but that never happened. If I had a place to hunt I wouldn't be selling it. I have shot it enough to sight it in for 3-4 seasons and that is about it. It fact I haven't even sighted in all of the pins on the Spot Hogg since installing that sight.

I work in BR also. It may be easier to just show it to you in person.

I like it. To be specific it is the Trophy Ridge Dropzone Hunter

Before using it I used the original version of the NAP Quicktune 360

even though the dropzone doesn't hold the arrow as securely as the 360, it liked it a lot better,,,,,and it seemed to be more consistent as for accuracy
