I'll second this. .30-06 is great around here but if you're gonna do some hunting anywhere with longer shots you'd want something that shoots flatter IMO

.270, 30-06, 308. The case could be made for all of them. You could probably throw a couple other less common rounds in there, but I don't see why you would.

I like the 270, but you could buy any of the three and never look back.

I like a 30-30, but it's benefits do not come close to out weighing its limitations, IMHO.

I'd say 7mm-08... Short action allows a lighter gun which is easier to carry. Less recoil than a .270 or 30-06. Its a damn accurate cartridge... Plus you can load it down for varmint, use standard loads for deer and hog, or you can load heavy for elk/black bear. Only a handful of guns and cartridges can make that claim.

The .270 seems like it is all-purpose from a "distancing" perspective. I was more looking for a gun that is accurate and all-purpose from an ammo perspective (if that makes sense). The 7mm-08 intrigues me.

I personally don't get it, but there's a lot of things I don't get.

What exactly do you mean by this?

Depends on what you are hunting and the terrain. In the south, probably a .270 or .30-06.

All the round listed are great ones. There is a reason they have been around for so long. Personally, I shoot a .270 and love it.

The one thing about the 7mm 08 is that ammo isn't always easy to get. If you forget to bring it with you and you are out in the boonies, you might not be able to buy it since it isn't that common.

Best of luck.

No such thing. You need different calibers for different things if you are going to do well. You might be able to get one to do a fair ob of a few things, or you could get a couple to do things very well. Plus, you can never have too many guns.

I've got a 7 mag and a .270. I prefer the .270 over the 7mag. As previously mentioned though, there is no such thing as an all purpose round. Thats why there are so many different calibers and loads. Each has been tweaked to do a certain job.

Real answer, IMO, .270 or 30-06.

For my alll purpose rifle i chose the 7mm mag. my reasoning when i went looking for a new rifle was that it had enough power and range to kill anything in north america. When i was looking there was not any of new kids on the block as in all the wsm.

.270 or 30-06 are about as good as your gonna find for an all-purpose hunting rifle.

Everyone has their favorite and I agree the 7mm-08 is a sweet gun to shoot it's damn near as fast as a .270 but fits in a small gun and don't kick. With the right bullet it will kill the hell out of a deer. I bought one for my kids but I like to shoot it too.

7mm mag is where it's at when it comes to putting massive exit wounds in animals of all sizes. I love my 7mm mag but hate the loss of hearing that accompanies firing it.
