You think it's necessary to have seen his other films before watching The Tree of Life in order to understand his style of film making....or just go into it not knowing what to expect?

The directors cut of The Thin Red Line is supposed to be longer and contain even more bit pieces from stars (Mickey Rourke comes to mind)

I second watching Days of Heaven first. TTOL is by far his most ambitious movie so there's no equal in his catalog, but DoH is probably his best or 2nd best, so you'll know if you like him or not based on that movie, I think

Because they shot a lot of footage like in other Malick films.

Yeah, but you would think that the other 3 hours not in the film would greatly affect the plot in some way. Thats alot of deleted scenes.

Actually I don't think it would affect the plot Not for this one. It's more about the sequence and tone of the clips than the narrative itself.

I heard they were. I think they went for the Criterion Collection instead (for now at least).

I don't think it would be critical to see Malick's other work, but it would definitely enhance your experience.

I don't see how seeing his past work can help enjoy this movie, it can give you an understanding of his style, but then again, so can The Tree of Life...

He's definitely not for everyone...
