On Eric Reid's twitter he states "man shout out to @CoachLesMiles for what he said in the paper today..he looks out for his players and is a hell of a coach." I don't live in the area and I'm on my phone. Anybody have the quote from Miles?

That dude is going to absolutely wreck shite this fall.

Oh, and I'm guessing he's talking about what Les said in regards to paying player.

quote:

Miles signed it without hesitation, saying it’s time to start
discussing paying players.
“We want to start a very open dialogue about how to have
some of those players who make such a great contribution on
Saturdays, who are good students, good people, that are
really having hardship even under full grant-in-aid
situations, be able to get them some money,” Miles said.
“That really is the issue.

I don't disagree, Les. However, Title IX is a bitch.

My guess is they're trying to get around that by saying it will come from the coach's pocket. There's no way a school will ever be able to pay just football players without the women's swimming and dive team bitching. Title IX is the fricking worst thing to ever happen to collegiate sports.

That "some" word could be extremely problematic.

So while many many students have to take out loans and leave college with huge debt, football players leave with no debt, have a scholarship that if they keep all 4 years is worth well over $100K and a degree that they can use to make money in the workplace after they graduate from a state university.

No way they should be paid. Their books, housing and food is all paid for too while enrolled.

Titke IX was necessary at the beginning. Without it, women sports simply would not have been a priority. Now i think it is completely worthless. All the way down to 9th grade level.

Seriously, you cant have a mens hockey team, or lacrosse team, cus there arent enough girls to form a womens team.

A lot of universities dont even have Men's soccer strictly because of Title IX.

Les is smart. He knows the NCAA will never allow paying players. Signing off on that was basically free PR.

I disagree, it had to happen, how it was administered and continues to be is what is unconscionable.

And while many many students take out loans and leave college with debt, the players earned a scholarship by being a superior athlete that will bring in money to the school. Winning = money. That's why players are brought here. They win, and they bring in boatloads of money to the universities (which, at LSU, supports academics) as well as the cities they play in. Those 8 Saturdays in Baton Rouge are huge moneymakers for businesses.

I, like many students who earned scholarships without athletics, didn't bring in money to the university. The players easily deserve that scholarship and then some.

But, it'll never happen if rules are followed.

about what Les said in regards to paying player.
Think about it from Les' perspective.
What would be more beneficial to him, recruiting, and the program?
1.) Saying players don't deserve it?
2.) Saying players deserve it?

It's not about what will or will not happen. I doubt the coaches will make the final decision, but it is in Les' (and LSU's) best interest to publicly support the policy for the sake of the players and/or recruiting!

I would be in favor of paying players if I didn't think the money would go towards jewelry and tattoos.

Just like students with superior academic talents get scholarships. However, those kids can get a job whilke in school.

So you admit they are compensated for their work. Which means all we're quibbling about is how much they should be compensated.

Also, the Big Ten's proposal regarding the actual cost of attendence shows that there are things scholarships don't cover. There additional expenses. Should the school cover those as part of the scholarship?
