Anyone been over Morganza lately?

Has anyone recently been up to Morganza Spillway lately? I'm going up there Saturday to have a look and I'm wondering if I'll be able to stop and get some pics while I'm there.
I've seen the drive-by videos but I'll be by myself so I doubt I'll be able to do that.
Any suggestions?

I went over Sunday, there was a sheriff on each side and big signs saying not to stop. I don't know if they'll cuff you if you try and get some pics from the ends, but I doubt you'd have a lot of time to loiter.

I was checking our gages on the structure last Friday and they had a couple with a bunch of kids stop and get out. Cops, park rangers, and national guard were on their arse within 60 seconds. They were escorted to their car and sent on thier way.
So to answer your question, No you can not stop.

I went yesterday. Just like everyone else has said, no chance to stop. It's cool to see, but honestly, it's not that different than the videos. It depends on where you're driving from, but I drove from Baton Rouge and it wasn't worth the trip.

I think if you've never been, the impact isn't as great. While seeing all that water is impressive by itself, knowing that everything south of there has ALWAYS been dry land in my lifetime really drives home just how big this whole thing is. Hell, I've only seen water north of there just a couple of times, and never anything close to that level.

I disagree. I drove over it Wednesday and it was unreal that amount of water and current moving right there. I personally believe that the videos dont do it justice, but thats just me.
Oh, and dont try to stop. Those people have much more to worry about than trying to get you to move on.

quote:True, but it makes me wonder why they don't let anyone stop to begin with. Cripes, this is a once in a lifetime event and they're refusing to allow people to get a good view of it.

It seems to make more sense for the state to build a viewing platform and charge admission. Heck, I'd pay.

I just came from there. I don't think the videos really show how much water there is out there.
But no, you definitely can't stop. There are signs on both sides that say "FOR THE NEXT 5 MILES, DO NOT STOP." I didn't see any cops out there, just one "Wildlife Agent" truck pulling a boat, and some guys from the Army CoE.

i passed on it last week and was able to stop. only because a corp worker on a golf cart was blocking a lane. and they were about to close the highway to open another gate
