Update on Ranaudo

From yesterday's Boston Globe. SIAP.
So far, so good for Anthony Ranaudo
By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff
The Sox are off today. But if you're interested in following some baseball, go on line and check in on how the Single A Greenville Drive fare tonight.
Anthony Ranaudo will be on the mound for Greenville. He is 1-0 with an 0.60 earned run average through three starts. His line so far:
15 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 7 BB, 15 K.
That's impressive considering Ranaudo had not pitched since last summer in the Cape Cod League. The 21-year-old out of LSU was the 39th overall pick in the draft last June, falling to the Red Sox because of health and signability issues.
The Sox have proceeded cautiously since, limiting Ranaudo's workload and having him start his pro career in Low A ball. If he continues to dominate the South Atlantic League, Ranaudo will likely be elevated to High-A Salem before too long.
It's not inconceivable that Ranaudo finishes the season with Class AA Portland. He was third in the nation in strikeouts as a sophomore trailing Stephen Strasburg and Mike Leake. This is a young man with a lot of talent. He's also 6-foot-7, 231 pounds.

Low A ball is less talent you would face in the SEC. half those guys will be cut in July after the draft, but he is putting up the stats you would expect.

They are in no rush to get him going. I like the slow approach. He'll more than likely be on the Bo-Sox staff next year sometime.

actually rookie league is better than SEC competition..that is why just about every player needs to put in some time there. Huge misconception that SEC comp is same or better than the lowest level of pro ball..

Does it really matter how good Anthony is? The team is not good. I guess if you wanted to be positive this would be a good post. However, nothing else about this team is good.

Hope so! Definitely hope so. I think he's got what it takes to be great.

Seriously? Half the guys in the SEC do not even get drafted each year. I would agree that the jump from low A to high A is a big one, but there is a difference in professional baseball and college baseball - no matter how good the conference is.

No. Now if you said rookie ball was a lower level of competition (not talent) than the SEC I might agree with you. Also, low A players don't randomly get cut in July because of the draft. Most drafted players go to rookie ball. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Rookie ball is generally full of 16 and 17 yr old foreign players and really raw American players

Almost always, Juniors or Seniors who get drafted in SEC, go straight to AA, or only stay in A for a very short time.

In 5 years will more Major League Players have played in SEC or Low A? If you are a starter in SEC do you have a better chance of making it to the Majors over being drafted and starting at Low A?
Honest question I don't know the answer.
