I'll be braving the Norwegian wilderness for a month this summer.

Amongst other things, I need a good knife.

Help!

Falkniven S1 FTW.

(I helped translate their web pages into readable English & received one of these as payment. They've since gone back to their sorry translator. )

S1 fixed blade

The F1 is the Swedish AF survival knife.

Buddy of mine got one for he and his wife a couple of months ago. I thought I read somewhere that they changed the type of steal they were making them with.

I think you may be talking about that they started making another version that is made with a different steel and less expensive.

If you got the money, look into Randall Knives in their survival section. They are expensive but worth it.

I'm surprised to see the variety of blades suggested. I have always thought that a knife that I intended to use for sruvival should be a fixed blade with minimum blade length of 5", single sided edge with a thick back edge, have at least some serrated edge to it, have a strong thick butt to the handle that can be used for hammering, a good hilt to prevent hand slippage and injury which can be deadly in the field, and be desigend for easy lashing to a stick to be able to use it as a spear if needed.

Having the additional empty handle that can hold matches, iodine pills, ect, is only a bonus if it does not comprimise the other functions and the container is water tight.

Of course, having a really good steel that holds its edge is paramount.

tell us what you'll be doing and what you envision to be the typical use for this knife.....are you talking about remote, back country living where you are making your own shelters or will you be basically backpacking roads and trails with a tent, etc?.......

wow is right...haven't looked into them in a long time...but that is crazy...like I said..very expensive but they are the best..IMO

There are a few places that sell them other than their website, howwever you will have to pay more....just putting it out there.

I have one but it was a gift from my dad who passed it down to me, but a friend of mine in the Special Forces got one as a gift from his parents as well.
