Let's go back to the beginning of the baseball season...

Did yall honestly think that our pitching would be holding us up and our hitting wouldn't be doing much of anything?
Posted on 4/14/11 at 8:52 am to Lsuman122
Nope. Isn't baseball great!
Posted on 4/14/11 at 8:52 am to Lsuman122
Nope, but I didn't think we were a super regional team either.

I thought we were at least a super regional team just cause I thought we would be hitting the ball better and that would help us win a lot of close games. Hell, if we get on a hot-streak like we did in '08 we could find our way. Hitting comes and goes in streaks.

that has happened once in LSU history and once in SEC history. you really think its going to happen again to the same team just three years later?

The team is due for some good breaks. They have lost a lot of very close games. It's not like LSU is getting trounced. They lost two 1 run games to Arkansas and 2-0 on Friday. Lost a few close ones to Florida.
Before the season I thought pitching was uncertain, but I knew there was a ton of talent there.
Hitting was going to be suspect with the new bats, and there are not a lot of pure stud hitters in this lineup. Mainieri needs to find a few in a recruiting and he needs to ignore (to some extent) how well they do other things (speed, glove) etc. He seems to like guys who can do it all. While that's great, you need guys who can just swing the stick even if they're slow or so-so fielders. Matt Clark is a good example.

or Blake Dean

Yes. Absolutely. It was the first thing I thought when I looked at the returning lineup and the players we signed. That the pitching would be better than the hitting was entirely predictable.

This.
We have some major talent but maybe they just need a year to gel and get some experience. Seems like everyone is a freshman.

Going into this season pitching was the ONLY question mark. No preseason writer in the country had questions about our hitting. Our pitching has been better than expected too with 2 true freshmen doing very well but getting losses while holding other teams to 4 hits.
What people should have been questioning was the leadership on this team as there is none. No vocal leaders at all only players who choose to lead by example..

I don't know what kind of locker room guy he is, but Mahtook sure seems vocal on the field.

I know baseball america certainly said LSU had concerns at the mound but not in the lineup..
Basically the preseason outlook from everywhere I read was saying we had to develop on the mound and replace 3 good hitters but we had loads of talent returning and ton of new talent so the outlook in the lineup was very good.
Here is another preseason review from an blog some local person wrote.

Their lineup should see plenty of fireworks throughout the year as a weakness seems tough to find anywhere. Omaha or bust rings across campus as the Tigers seem destined to restore their 2009 form.

I have heard them ask him many times before and he is a self proclaimined leader by example guy.

Which is leading by example. Vocal leader would be the guy in the locker room and dugout that is getting the team going.

Yeah, I'm getting tired of people using the leadership excuse, Mahtook is definitely the leader

Then he isnt doing very good at it.
The guy is quoted as saying he leads by example.
Hell Charles Hanagriff was on the radio saying just that yesterday. Who do you think has been in the locker room more? Josh336 or CH?

That is what they said in 2008 about South Carolina's SEC record 22 game winning streak which is now an LSU SEC record.
Statistics are meaningless in baseball nowadays. Example, LSU struck out 10 times in the Northwestern game to a guy that has only tossed 25 K's all season and opponents BA against the same guy was over .300!!
What is my point???
WE CAN WIN 23 GAMES IN A ROW!!! Just because it has only happened once in our history does not mean we can not repeat it a couple years later! LSU football only had one national title before 2003 and now we have 3!!!!!!!

So because the team isn't winning, it means the team's leaders aren't doing a good job or that they have no leadership? Having leadership is contingent on winning? It can't just be that they aren't very good?

So this team is good enough to go toe to toe with the #4 team in the country and sweep the #8 team in the country but we have been struggling to finish games and come out of a bad slump.. Thats all because of bad talent huh?
Players that were fine under what was known and proven leadership last year in Gibbs and Dean are now struggling because they suck? Is that your argument?
But when asked yesterday what was the big problem with LSU baseball this year CH pointed to leadership as being the problem and the only leadership they had was on the field by example guys..
I remember that because I kept waiting for a guy named Josh to call in and tell him he was wrong and he didnt know anything about LSU baseball.

In what ways were these guys leaders? What did they do to be leaders?
I happen to believe leadership is one of the most overrated things in baseball. I never looked at the good teams that I played on and said "we were good because we had good leadership" or vice versa for the bad teams. Most of the time it boiled down to talent and/or coaching
