To non golfers. Here is my long rant on why I cant stand Tiger (this was before the whores.) Before his indiscretions he was still a disgrace to the game. Throwing clubs cussing loudly after missing his mark by 2 feet. All around acting like a spoiled entitled brat. The guy had the most talent around but he was the antithesis of golf. You are supposed to act like a gentleman on the course, at least in public. Tiger was the opposite of that. Honestly the public should have figured him out sooner. We were supposed to think that the guy who was the worst at letting his emotions get to him on the court was the ultimate pr nice guy robot off of it?

Daly got away with his image because he was Daly and he wasnt the best. Tiger was supposed to be Arnie and Jack on the course and he failed miserably. Im far from the only one who thinks this.

My exact same feelings on the guy

We know that TV ratings are higher for tournaments that Tiger is playing.
However, there is no way to tell how many viewers tune in to watch him win and how many tune in to watch him fall on his arse.

Does it matter which way it is? The networks don't care why were watching..as long as were watching..

I agree with most of what you wrote.

However, I think you realize that Tiger is not the only professional who curses or slams his club in the turf. Most do. They just aren't on camera constantly with a boom microphone 10 feet away.

Prior to the accident, the advertisers didn't mind as he was the highest paid ahtlete endorser.

I disagree. He changed the media's view of the game and all they saw was dollar signs with Tiger's smile on it.

The game does not evolve because of one man. The game is the game.

That's bullshite. The young guns you speak of most likely would not be playing golf if not for Tiger. Tiger made golf cool. He brought a type of player in that would not have considered golf if not for him. These players are taller and more athletic than their forebears. I think the average height has increased from 5'10 to over 6 feet tall for a professional golfer. You don't see in fat young guys out there. They are all in top shape. THAT is how Tiger has changed the game for the better.

quote:

Woods predicted as much years ago when classic courses around the world started stretching their perimeters to curb the effects of the power Woods and modern technology brought. As he helped popularize the game and make it more lucrative , it was considered a lure for more athletic players to join him on the fairways. Safe to say that 15 years into his career, his new peer group doesn't look a lot like Craig Stadler or Tim Herron anymore. The Walruses and Lumpys are becoming endangered species on the PGA Tour. More often, longer and leaner and more athletic guys such as Dustin Johnson, Gary Woodland, Jhonattan Vegas and Alvaro Quiros are playing golf instead of other sports they would be suited to excel in as well. "I always thought this was a pretty good sport, but growing up, that wasn't the case," Woods said. "It wasn't a cool sport to play. But I think that having more other athletes play the game, like a Michael Jordan play the game and expose it that way, has made kids think that this is a pretty cool sport to play. They try and they are hooked too, and they love the challenge of it. "I think that is pretty neat to see the game change. The game has gotten taller and it has gotten bigger. Guys are much more athletic and faster."

And TIGER would NOT be playing golf without Arnold Palmer. ARNIE made golf cool. He came along just at the right time when the Masters just started getting on TV.

To be honest Arnie did more for golf than any other player EVER. Think about it.

There's definitely an argument for that. Arnie made it to where you could make a good living playing golf. Tiger made it to where you could get rich playing golf.

I do agree with that it always seems they are extending holes because the guys are in better shape and the better clubs that are coming out. The one thing that will never change though is the winner will probably be someone who has been hitting his putts.

A jealous husband also threatened to kill Arnold in New Orleans one year, people just don't understand how the media has changed.

Exactly. In Arnie's prime the writers were out at night with the players but they only wrote about what happened between the ropes.

if he was just a top 50 golfer his whole career nobody would even talk about it

Connors and McEnroe were praised by the masses for acting the same way Tiger does, actually a lot worse.
