Stating the Obvious..Tiger is Golf.

Is a pretty obvious statement..but golf needs TW to do good. I could NOT care less about golf and the masters, but since Tiger is on a run and has a chance I will actually be watching it this wkd..and I think most of the country is the same way..he brings that casual fan into it. As much as some people may or may not like him as a person..PGA needs the GOLFER.
stating the obvious but yeah..

I can see this. Just remember, he won't be around for ever. But in a sense you are right Golf is a unique game. People that watch it want to see the best, at the same time If he wasn't contending and those three young players keep it at THAT level The ratings wouldn't suffer that bad.IMO.

I agree wit you. Despite his character flaws, he is the most compelling athlete in the world. Like most Americans, I love a winner!!

I like golf, and I love watching the majors with or without Eldrick.
However, I don't disagree with your above statement. It seems much of America just doesn't care unless Tiger is in contention. I will also admit that being "anti-Tiger", I will watch more intently when he is in contention just to see if someone can beat him.

bullshite shallow observation.
The PGA thrived before Tiger, it will after.
It's TV and hero worshippers(edit:see an above post) who NEEDS Tiger.

And that's where the big bucks come in. TV ratings = more ads, people buying more golf equiptment, etc. Since Tiger came into golf, the popularity exploded with millions of more people golfing, buying clubs, supplies, clothing, joining clubs, etc.

Not arguing he increased revenue for golf and TV...
TV needs him more than the PGA.
PGA will still be around with a solid following after Tiger.

I wouldn't watch if Tiger wasn't in it. I like golf but I have to much going on in my life to watch if nothing is going on. If Tiger is lurking, it's suddenly interesting.

And the CBS suits thank you. The difference in ratings and revenue when Tiger is in contention and when he isn't is significant.

I'll admit it. I never, I mean, NEVER gave a crap about golf before Tiger. If he were to suddenly stop being relevant permanently, via sucking or whatever...I'd pay the same amount of attention to the Masters as I'd do anything relating to hockey or soccer.

Of course the PGA will survive without Tiger, but TV isn't the only thing that loves Tiger. The other golfers on tour know they make as much money as they do because of Tiger. Prize winnings have gone up considerably since Tiger began playing.

All I want to watch is TIger play. I wish they had a camera on him the whole time

Tiger has brought a ton of people into the game (including myself), but there seems to be a large populace who thinks every other golfer sucks, and Tiger is immortal. People need to realize that his prime has passed him, and that there is an exciting new generation of players coming up right now.
I hope Tiger plays awful today just so all of those casual fans who only watch golf because of him will be disappointed.

which essentially is bad for golf and the PGA overall though...

Seriously, do you really think he's not past his prime? Not being in your prime doesn't have to mean washed up.

you are everything that is wrong with life. You basically undercut your own argument by saying you don't really care about golf or the masters. you just care about sucking Tiger's little tiger.
Why don't you go wait for him at a hotel after the round I'm sure he's into it.

I don't care one bit about Tiger and I grew up watching Golf with my dad and I will continue watching Golf with my son long after Tiger is no longer Tiger.
Just because the american public who doesn't watch Golf unless Tiger is playing won't watch, doesn't mean others wont.
Tiger does not equal golf. Tiger = TV ratings and there is HUGE difference.
