To the poster who questions Wilbur Marshall's place on the list, I am curious if you saw him play college?
quote:No doubt he was a force, and one of the greats. But I also saw Dorsey and Peterson play, and Alan Faneca, and Michael Brooks; are there any of those you could say weren't a "force"?
Marshall was a force and I certainly have no problem with where he is ranked.
As was posted above, past the first few, it becomes a nit-picking and hairsplitting debate. I would put those guys (and a few others like Reed, Ingram, Emmitt and that Tennessee WR from about '98-'99 whose name I can't remember now) ahead of Marshall, but I certainly wouldn't call it wrong to put him ahead.

Not knocking any of those guys but you could arguably replace any with the following; Dorsey, Emmett Smith, Peterson, Reed, Hilliard, Faneca, Mawae, Ingram, Bradie James, George Teague, Jamal Lewis or a host of others. Even one-hit-wonder Cam deserves a mention for one of the all-time great collegiate seasons.

come on. I am an LSU fan and can't even make the case for 7 other LSU players to make the list. Objectivity may be in order. While they were all excellent college players, I dont see them as top 16 since 1980.

quote:I think his point was that such a ranking is subjective enough that several dozen more players could easily be argued worthy (including several from LSU). I don't believe he was actually suggesting that 8 of the top 16 SEC players in the last 30 years have been from LSU.

sCam Newton should be nowhere near the list, neither should McFadden
Pollack I agree with you position, but you fail miserably on the other points....

I love Kevin, but NFL=/=NCAA. He was is behind other LSU lineman as well......Andolsek, Albergamo, and Lance Smith just to name a few. While he had a stellar/HOF career in the NFL, in college he was great but not legendary.

Damn, 16 SEC players from the past 30 years, that's tough. I'm not sure I'd have any LSU players on that.

Champ Baily and George Teague are good ones. I'm thinking of Hines Ward, too, but I also think his pro career influences that more than his college career.

quote:I was torn on Mawae, as well. There was so much crappiness on those teams he played on (especially the coaching staff) that it was really difficult to gauge how well he was doing his job. Ultimately I couldn't put him in simply because I couldn't see enough success in his body of work, even though I knew it likely wasn't his fault.

Damn, you're right, 30. At least start start the bracket with 64 and narrow it down to 16.

meh.....not really the case. Kevin played up to his potential garnering All-SEC honors for 3 straight years, but not quite AA level. Kenny Ferro adored Kevin and put him on the fast track until the Archer regime was removed. Then Buddy King took over. Though Buddy was a sack of shite, he loved Kevin (what coach wouldn't) and did provide enough guidance for his success.
Kevin has always struggled keeping on top teir weight. Guy's naturally lean and was pounding the Weight Gainer 2000 shakes right after his senior season to just get in the neighborhood of 280.

I know no one is going to agree with me, but based on college Wuerffel should be above Manning.
Danny won 4 SEC titles and 1 national title, a Heisman Trophy, 2 Davey O'Brien awards, set record for career TD passes.
Manning had incredible stats as well, but lacks the hardware. (And went 0-4 against UF fwiw )
