Stewart Mandel AGAIN badmouthing Les on oversigning

Will this never end? In an article about an answer Saban gave about oversigning, Mandel had this to say (Saban's portion is the first sentence and Mandel's response follows):
quote:
And we do have some guys that may grayshirt. Let me address that too, because I think there is a lot of criticism in grayshirting that is unfair.
On this he's right. The fault in Machen's pitch against grayshirting was that he lumped together cases like LSU's Elliott Porter -- whom Les Miles reprehensibly pulled a scholarship from last year after Porter had already moved into his dorm -- with, say, former Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson, who willingly waited a year in order to play for his beloved Crimson Tide.

And what's he say about Chizik? Or outside the SEC, Kiffin?
F Stewart Mandel.
F Stewart Mandel.

Oversigning is not against the rules. The scholarship is a one yr deal and like every other scholarship is based on performance. When coaches quit getting fired for not winning their respective divisions then football can go back to being an extracurricular activity designed for the studentsenjoyment. USC signes 29 along with a lot of other schools. Quit letting this stuff bother you.

Of course he failed to mention the follow up on the Porter story. You know Stewie how Elliott is like back on the team and all playing for the evil man that was so reprehensible.

I'm not the one who brought it up. Stewie did in an article about someone else and only brought up facts that back up his agenda for the story.

You lost me, dude.

My fault.... I didn't read close enough. Got it.
I still say F Stewart.

If you have a distaste for the truth, step into your mother's closet in your mother's house you live in.

Porter has a grayshirt and declined.
Mandel is a douche

He left out the part where Porter has left the Kentucky full ride and is now at LSU and will probably work towards a scholarship.
Those minute details. Who needs them?

Can't believe anyone would defend oversigning. It's not against the rules, but to mess with young kids future is wrong.

the reason oversigning is done is because there are usually 3-4 kids that never qualify or are dismissed for disciplinary reasons.

Here's Mandel's response to that.
"We get that some players will inevitably run into academic or disciplinary troubles, and that a coach is well within his rights to cut such players loose. What we don't get is how Saban is magically able to project exactly how many such players will run amok each year so he knows how many scholarships he can afford to give out to recruits."

Want to know why LSU oversigned last year? Because they believed Brad Wing would not qualify. Want to know why they thought that? Because the NCAA friggin' told LSU he wouldn't qualify.
The argument that LSU is "immoral" starts with the school standing by Brad Wing and trying to reverse an NCAA decision that would have barred him from getting into school. The more "moral" act would have been to ditch Wing and not have the extra player. What a crock.

What about a kid like Houston Bates who commits during LSU summer camp so he basically shuts down his recruiting?
Posted on 2/7/11 at 8:53 am to Tigerpaul1969
Did he say anything about the amount of medical hardships Saban tosses out?
I heard the other day that in 10 years Ohio St has had 4 medical hardships.
Bama has 12 in 4 years, half of the entire SEC. I just don't buy that 12 players have had career ending injuried in 4 years. If they have, it's time for a new training staff.

How is that relevant to my point at all? LSU was over the limit because the NCAA misled LSU and Brad Wing. The timing of Bates' signing is completely irrelevent.

So use Saban's name in the article and leave Les and LSU out. It seems like Les is one of the coaches that limits the oversigning. Isn't Porter the only example of a greyshirt offer being required since Les has been here? And is it that big of a deal that Porter was asked to wait one semester for his scholarship?

I wish ya'll would call Mandel out on this since he obviously is in over his head and spews garbage. This is just more garbage for other conferences to repeat about the SEC out of jealousy and ignorance.

LSU told Wing ahead of time they didn't think they could get his transcripts cleared "in time". Wing & his parents got it done on their own dime. Then, LSU's Admissiosn Office told him he needed a different visa to get into school. Austrailia will not issue that one anywhere but on Austrailian soil, so he actually flew all the way to Austrailia, got it done, & then flew all the way back.
LSU jacked up the Wing/Porter situation. You always prepare for potential problems, & them not getting out in front of this one months before with a frank, honest discussion is a tail that can only be pinned on one donkey: Les Miles.
He honestly dropped the ball there. Which is strange, because between Sam Nader & the Eligibility Center (formerly known as the NCAA Clearinghouse), LSU has a pretty good relationship & track record in getting kids in quickly & finding out what they need.
