Claiming Married and 9

I have a buddy who works for a plant and gets overtime.
He says that he can claim married and 9 for two checks a year and be exempt from additional taxes for those two checks.
I told him he was full of shite.
Was I right?

Is he claiming that on his w-4? If so it doesn't change his tax liability at the end of the tax year just how much he pays each check.

I'm not 100% sure what the rules are but I used to always claim extra deductions for payroll so I didn't get such a large return. No reason to give the govt an interest free loan.

Tell him he's not going to get two separate W2's. It all going on one.
I'd like to know where he heard that from? His advisor must work for Mo' Money Taxes.

I used to do this at my previous job and I just did the same thing for my February paycheck at my new job.
I usually do it twice a year and because of the amount of tax deductions I have, I can easily break even or still just a few dollars my way.
I'd rather have it than the government.

I thought I remembered that only applying above a certain threshold, and that being a non-negligible amount of like $120k.

go to www.irs.gov and search for the withholding calculator. You'll need to have your most recent paystub and know roughly the total amount of any deductions you'll take through the year. I usually check the calculator a couple of times a year to make sure i'm on track.
I usually withhold 16, because I have so many deductions. I usually end up getting a small federal refund back.

I would like to figure out how to adjust it so I would just break even.

Most of the mexicans that work around here claim the maximum number of dependents.

What are they going to do when the IRS comes to audit them?

I used to do this on big commission checks. It just means they take out less on that check. Not a big secret it is just to get more money now as opposed to getting it back later. In some cases if you do it too much you will owe taxes come tax time
