I know ballistically, 9mm has much more strength, but is the .380 round enough of a load to keep as a side gun or in the car? Or should I just forget about the LCP and get a 9mm?

Exactly the questions I've been wondering about.

A .380 is absolutely enough for a small carry or truck gun. You may want to research ammo as there are a lot of options out there that make a lot of difference (+P, etc).

Thats what I figured. I dont need her to carry anything around to blow walls down.. Just enough to protect incase she needs. btw, its for the wife to carry.

I'm gonna take her to shooters to try it out.. She struggles big time with my XD but that slide is very stiff, way harder than my glock was.

There is alot of debate about running +p ammo in a .380. I have the s&w bodyguard .380 which i believe to be well made but i dont run +P in it. This is a close quarters round....regular loads do the job within 5 yards....and thats all i need it for.

What is the debate about? Does the +p ammo damage the gun? And how much of a difference does the +p ammo make>

I read that .380 has as close to or better ballistic than a .38

+ P ammo generates higher pressures and subsequently can cause accelerated wear and/or damage to the firearm. Most manufacturers manuals state what you should and shouldnt use as far as ammo. I use + p ammo in my .45's. The increase bullet speed isnt taking the .45 round out of the subsonic range therefore still doing what the .45 is known best for, dissapating the energy of the round into and not through its target. The .380 in + p is almost a contradiction. Its not designed to be fired over any real distances and in fact in my experience any shot over 15 yards the round becomes innacurate and unreliable. Basically when trying to shoot something or in this case someone any farther than maybe 5 to 10 yards is impractical and beyond the effective range of the weapon. So basicaly i feel like regular .380 loads are sufficient based on what i consider the weapons range of use. At least for my purposes of deep concealment. I may be totally biased on this, i am a 1911 in .45 kinda guy. Its what i carry. Like i said i do own a .380 as a backup.

Uncle Jack, please do some research and Google searches on the .380 you choose. I had some issues with a Walther .380 I bought for the girlfriend and after some looking around I found that this was more common than I thought with these small semi auto pistols. I’m not saying they’re not an option, just saying I had a bad experience and suggest you research before buying.

Please see my reply in your handgun for the wife thread.

The next gun I buy will be a .380, either an LCP or a TCP. For concealed carry use with quality ammo I'm confident it will do the job and still be easy to carry in a front pocket. However most women carry in their purse or not at all. If she's not concerned about having the smallest pistol possible I'd got with a hammerless .38 revolver. Pull the trigger and it goes bang. No worrying about magazines, slides, safeties, etc.

The Ruger LCP is not rated for +p ammunition. I would really advise against loading +p in the LCP.

There really isn't a world of difference in a 9mm v. a .380acp. A 9mm is a longer cartridge and a slightly heavier bullet.

Nothing personal, but I strongly disagree….

It has gotten a lot better; cabalas and Academy always have a crap load, as does wal-mart. It is pretty expensive though, relative to other calibers, priced about the same as .40.

So does almost everyone else. I just didn't want to be the first to say it.
