CALL THE GAME YOUR ATHLETES CAN EXECUTE, NOT THE ONE YOU WISH THEY COULD.

We should have a QB coach as well though. Never combine them

I don't blame Crowton as an OC
1) running the option when Lee was in the game?
2) substituting on the goalline in the Tenn game?
3) low ranked offenses: 86th in 2010, 112th in 2009, 55th in 2008?
4) lack of development on any of our QBs? especially when he's the QB coach.
quote:Again, running the read option with Lee in the game is NOT running a different system.
You saw it this year with Lee. Minus a few times where we wanted to establish a running game, when he played, it was a different system

Gary Crowton always called a decent game, in my opinion---but he was limited by the quarterback's inability to execute the offense.
The real problems that need to be addressed are the quarterback and the offensive line. The team needs a good developer of quarterbacks, and better technique is needed in the offensive line (on a consistent basis).
Crowton could make offensive adjustments, but they didn't show because of the lack of execution.
We might also want to look at the wide receivers coach---I noticed a difficulty of our receivers getting open at times.
WTF?!?!?!

Isnt the offensive coordinator supposed to be pretty good a coaching quarterbacks? Hell if JJ was taught correctly then he wouldnt hold the ball for 5 seconds. An NFL line couldnt stop ULL players when the quarterback doesnt move around in the pocket and stands there for 5,6.7 seconds.

Doesn't matter who's fault it was.
The offense is his job. It declined for 3 yrs. This means you are moving on. Doesn't matter if the QB play added to it...its his job to fix it.
My problem with the Crowton years is identity. Our offense didn't have one.
I care more about that then who the new OC will be. We need to decide what we will be and then go full force that direction. Stop trying to be a smashmouth, playaction, 4 wide-out, option running, zone-read team. It doesn't work. Defense don't have to "prepare for more". They just sit back and wait for us to screw up.

Your post shows a real lack of serious thought and research.

I agree, Crowton was not the problem.

The bottom line is that he didn't have the personnel to run the offense he was trying to run. A good OC would have adjusted his offense to fit his players.

why did he suck (after year 1) at BYU and Oregon?

crowton required that he coach QBs, so this is a problem crowton created

Here's a shocking thought: Maybe JJ just isn't as good as some people think he is.
Granted, it was Crowton's fault too. But maybe JJ just couldn't learn.
just my $0.02

Crowton never consistently put his quarterbacks in a good position for them to succeed.
He was the problem.
He was the problem.

If you read the interview with Crowton, he stated that he always tried to use Miles system. In a round about way and not trying to be obvious, he blamed Miles for his failures. Read the article posted by dandydon. I'm glad he is gone.

So you are telling me that among JJ, Lee, and Shep, Crowton couldn't groom a game-manager QB from there?
JJ has strengths as a QB. He can actually run well in space. He throws well on the run. And we saw in the bowl game, he can hit the PA pass and showed some touch on the fade to TT. On the open side of the field, he actually made some great reads on the option. The guy isn't as terrible as everyone says he is when the calls are made that play to his strengths.
Crowton was TERRIBLE at playing to our guys' strengths. He was notorious for backing away from successful plays -- probably out of fear of being too predictable, he actually created a second problem (and a third one) -- the second one was that we became predictable in another way: we would run only one or two plays out of certain sets, so defenses (and fans) always knew what was going to come. Too many sets with too few options out of each one = predictable. Further, the third problem was that too many players were in too many different formations, and this complicated the substitutions for our offense. Ever notice how many times we came out of a timeout and still looked lost? That's not the HC there, that's the play calling. Too much confusion, no identity.

He wasn't the answer either.
If you remember what the Oregon fans had to say about him when we hired him, he shouldn't have been the question, either.

Crowtons not free from blame either
BTW I wish Stud would go with him

Sorry man...you arent always going to have a stead at the QB position
When you dont you need to develop an offense that works best with what you have, not having a matt flynn is not an excuse to have the 112 ranked offense...there are no reasonable excuses for that at this level of football

JJ isn't the only QB at LSU.
QBs at LSU under Crowton (developed):
Jarrett Lee - 4*
Jordan Jefferson - 4*
Chris Garrett - 3*
Russell Shepard - 5*
We also had Hatch for a year.
5 QBs and Crowton couldn't find 1 that worked?
Why did Crowton run the read option with Lee? It certainly didn't fit to his strengths.
Why did LSU recruit QBs with different strengths? Drop back like Garrett, Zach Lee, Jarrett Lee; Mobile like Jefferson, Shepard. I don't believe for a second that Crowton wasn't involved in these decisions.
Let's look at the QBs under Jimbo Fisher (developed):
Matt Flynn - 4*
JaMarcus Russell - 4*
Ryan Perrilloux - 5*
Lester Ricard Jr. - 4*
Matt Mauck
Josh Booty
Rohan Davey
5 of out 7 were outstanding. See a difference?

"It's a very emotional time for me, very hard," Crowton said. "I just felt he (Edsall) was a good friend. Randy is a defensive coach by trade and wanted me to come in and install the whole offense, my terminology and everything, and do it the way I've done it in the past in some other places. I thought it would be a great challenge."
Crowton's words... how much control did he have ????
