Was walking through the woods today, and flushed my first woodcock. Has me wanting to give them a shot. Anyone ever hunt these long beaked bastards.

i've almost pulled the trigger on a few of these....before sunrise they sure look like a duck when you see them out of the corner of your eye

Used to hunt them all the time. My method is not...really....postable.

Shot a few. They fly erratically and not too fast. Used to jump them in the evening near dusk.

Shot a few but never hunted them. Seems like it would be fun though. I love shooting any bird that flies...

They are the primary reason I go to the woods and the only reason I have 3 bird dogs at the house. Quail are gone; they are the only wild upland bird to pursue in Louisiana. The meat is good, but I do it because I enjoy the dog work.

This is a shame. We used to have quail all over our land years ago, but land use and farming practices have changed which has pretty much doomed the bobwhite quail in Louisiana. Predators and fire ants have also taken a toll.

We have been seeing a few quail in our fields around the house. Only problem is all the damn predators around. Just got a versatile dog, so think I am going to try and kill a few(woodcock)soon.

I'm itching to shoot some timberdoodles. What breed of dog?

I was talking to a guy that hunts woodcock up around tensas. He said he limits out everytime. Supposedly there are a fair amount of birds in the crp fields...... I know zip about woodcock hunting. Hell I just had to google woodcock to see what they look like.

She is a Drahthaar, suppose to be a versatile hunting dog. So far she has trailed deer and retrieved birds.
This is a video of a bad arse one. Can only hope mine turns out as well. LINK

I jumped up one right off of my patio last year around 4:30 a.m. when I took my dog out to do her business. The bird bounced off of my house so hard and was so stunned I could've reached up and grabbed it as it flailed dizzily above my head.
