Below is the Top 25 BCS schools in hierarchal order by ranking. Next to them is their average school recruiting ranking from the past 5 recruiting classes. If it says 65, that simply means they weren't in the top 50. Rankings pulled from Rivals. As a side note, this isn't the ranking of their average recruiting rankings, it's the actual average of their recruiting rankings, such that Alabama is actually ranked number 1 or 2, Florida would actually be ranked 1-3 and USC would be ranked 1-3, but Alabama's average class ranking is 5 or whatever, so even though it's the #1 average, the real number is 5. I guess what I'm saying is that you won't see an average of 1, unless a team had the #1 recruiting ranking all 5 years..

Auburn 12
Oregon 24.8
TCU 57.4
Stanford 45.2
Wisconson 44.6
Ohio State 11.8
Oklahoma 9.8
Arkansas 31.8
Michigan State 33.8
Boise State 65
LSU 6
Missouri 33.2
Virginia Tech 25
Oklahoma State 29
Nevada 65
Alabama 5.6
Texas A&M 34.6
Nebraska 22.6
Utah 54.2
South Carolina 17.6
Mississippi State 38.4
West Virginia 36.8
Florida State 10
Hawaii 65
UCF 65

If you combine these numbers with strength of schedule and look at alternate factors such as: coaching changes, injuries or bad qb (as this is the one position that touches the ball every down on offense) it becomes surprisingly accurate. For instance, teams with lower strength of schedule rankings that also have lower recruiting rankings still end up high on the BCS which shows that once again this system allows the media to influence voters in ridiculous ways by pointing out rare exceptions and trying to make them the rule (utah vs bama).

If only Les wasn't so horrible.
We'd be at least number zero or maybe even negative two.

Not entirely related, but you wouldn't happen to know the average recruiting rankings for a few of the teams outside of the top 25 (Texas and Florida primarily)?

I'm fairly certain they have good recruiting and good SOS, but they still have crap records and aren't in the top 25. Would they just be anomalies? Or perhaps it was the bad QBs.

Is Coach Miles achieving up to LSU's peak potential with the talent he has?

If not, why not?

If so, how come there are so many teams with less talent ahead of Coach Miles?

Glib, douchey comments like yours are not analysis. I'd like to see Coach Miles subjected to serious critical analysis and evaluation. This is the only way that he'll be able to identify deficiencies and formulate plans to correct deficiencies.

Right?

I have an idea. Perhaps few people could post some criticisms of Les Miles? Would that be what you want? I mean the idea is so revolutonary.

Right-o. Since the aveage fan knows so much more than a professional coaching staff, it is obvious that help is needed. I am shocked, shocked I tell you that this hasn't been proposed before now.

Are recruiting rankings fact, or are they just someone's subjective opinion?

Let's start by looking at it like this:

There are two main tracks a college football coach should be evaluated on, graduating student athletes and winning football games.

Along the track of graduating student athletes is the goal of developing quality young men.

Along the track of winning football games is winning championships.

This all starts with assembling a quality staff and scouting and signing quality character and quality talent in high-school players.

The track of graduating quality young men seems to be grade A. Miles' players seem to have been getting in less trouble than in the past, and he graduates his players at a higher rate than most schools in 1A football. This is a testament to scouting quality character, and and counselling them effectively.

The track of winning championships is probably where the perception of Miles' shortcomings are greatest. Miles has put together a staff that is capable of winning games consistantly. This is a testament to his and his staff's ability to scout and sign quality talent. Towards the goal of winning championships, the problem seems to be in developing that talent and/or devising schemes that suit the talent.

I see it as Miles is 75% effective overall and with some adjustments to his staff, that will improve the 25% where he is lacking in effectiveness. All the other pieces seem to be in place to begin winning more championships.

Miles has shown he has the ability to win at the highest level in his first few seasons, it's the last few where he's slipped. I think it's a bit premature to make any definitive statements regarding Miles' ability to get back to the championship level as 3 years is really not enough data on which to determine a trend.

All other factors remaining at a high level, I think Miles has proven that he deserves at least a few more seasons in which to regain championship form.

Overall in 6 seasons:

Signing quality character and quality talent A+
Graduating quality young men A
Winning football games B+
Winning championships B-

This shows how much a good coaching staff is worth to their respective schools.

Or how weak of a schedule they play.

What this tells me is that a team still needs a qb who is worth a shite and a decent OC.

So, Alabama was the most underperforming team this year?

Hmmm.

This is absolutely reasonable at this point in time. And, I will say that I am among Coach Miles's most severe amateur critics. As such, by joining you on this important point, those who advocate more immediate adverse action against Coach Miles are completely marginalized.

Everybody likes Coach Les Miles. I personally find him to be extremely affable, likeable and personable. That said, I hope that all of his great qualities never will prevent anyone from subjecting his professional performance to objective critical analysis.

Coach Miles is not a perfect college football coach, is he? No, of course not. As such, I look forward to his self-analysis and self-improvement in areas that need such improvement.

Now then, am I going to be subjected to personal and vitriolic attacks by some of the Internet Tough Guys that abound here on TD? Of course I am. So, FIRE AWAY, YOU DOUCHEBAGS !
