Cannon's run question...

Were any of you at that Halloween 1959 game who may remember in what direction Cannon returned his famous 89 yard punt return?
On TV it looks like he caught it on the South end and returned it to the North end. Correct?

Don't know but every time I see that run...I laugh. Football has come a long way. Seems like he ran that play in about 40 seconds flat. Did anyone have speed back then...

If the pressbox was always on the west side, which I believe it was then yes the film shows him running right to left (south end to north end)

i wasn't there. my dad was. it has to be south to north b/c they would have filmed that from the press box, which would have been located on the west side.

Certainly not the same speed as today's players. In Billy Cannon's time he was considered very fast for a football player.

Cannon ran track.
He ran a 10 flat 100 often, and a couple of times 9.6 which was world class at the time.
The field was muddy.
he was covered in mud.

He ran 100 yards in 9.5 seconds; coverted to 100 meters, it is 10.39.

I didn't see it but was told it was South to North. I always watch for the "extra referee" who found his way onto the field and ran down the sideline with him. He got in the game because he brought a ref's uniform with him and no one questioned him.

We joke about that, but the old film does distort the reality of the situation.
One, I believe it was a pretty sloppy field.
Two, Cannon's fastest 100 yard dash was a hand-timed 9.4. That converts to about a 10.37, electronically times 100m. While that's not setting the world on fire, it would be comparable to what most of our skill athletes would run. Also, Cannon carried some size and lots of strength with that speed - over 6' and he played at LSU at about 205 to 208 pounds, though he played a little heavier in the pros.
He was an exceptionally gifted athlete for his era. Cannon would earn a scholarship today. He would not start (except possibly at safety), but could play backup corner, tailback or H-back and would still be able to return kicks.

I've always thought he was more a 9.9 guy over 100 yards. Still fast in the 50's but 9.5 is absolutely blazing.

In the 50's cameras were set up in the press box. That will gice you the answer.

Cannon would be considered very fast today. He ran a 9.4 100 yard dash at a time when the world record was 9.3. A 9.4 at 100 yards translates to about 10.1 100 meters. In those days, they didn't have the fast synthetic tracks that you see today. They ran on dirt with a layer of cinders on the surface.

Are you freaking kidding me. The guy was one of the best all time and won the Heisman trophy and you are really going to sit here and say he only would have maybe started at Safety if recruited today. Really?

Because the only being to ever run a 9.6 100 or below is Usain Bolt.

100 yards my man, not 100 meters of today. They only ran 100 yards back in the day, actually probably up until the late 80's early 90's started running meters in the USA. I could be wrong.

The poster said yards not meters.
