This weeks Sports Ilustrated has an article in it about why their will never be a play off in Division I football. The bottom line is "American Greed" from the AD's, coaches, and bowl repsentatives. They say the only way it will happen is if the US Justice Departments gets involved for Anti-trust violations.

good, i don't want to see Ohio State resting their starters vs Michigan because they already have a playoff spot sewn up.

Don't most coaches actually want a playoff system? I seem to remember reading an articles in ESPN the Mag about how a lot of Div. I coaches voted for a playoff.

I used to be strongly in favor of a playoff system, but I've really cooled since then. One of the factors that makes CFB unique is that every game counts--every frickin week. No matter who you're playing. It keeps us up at night and on our toes.
You simply can't mail too many in in college (at least not in the SEC).
Now, we could tighten restrictions on BCS bowls...i.e. You can't play 10 shitbag teams with losing schedules and qualify for the NCG.

cool. I don't want no stinking playoff. Plus One would be just fine thanks

I don't think it's an antitrust violation. If the DOJ were to act on the BCS, I think they would lose.

If playoff you would still want to be the higher seed so you wouldn't rest your players. Also most college level playoffs involve possible home games as people wouldn't want to travel half way across the country for a first round playoff game. So you would be playing for home field as well so the games would still have meaning.

yes how horrendous that the people in charge of finances for non profit state subsidised institutions should rejection something that makes more money to help pay for non revenue generating sports because some fans and sports writers don't like the fact that 1 sport doesn't have the same type of tournament that other sports do to determine a champion.

8 team playoff seems to be a very popular option. Ohio State is 9th. Also if you give the top 4 seeds home games that would help with the issue of teams taking weeks off too.

No doubt, but it wouldn't be the same. College has an entirely different feel to it than the NFL...for several reasons.
The all or nothing nature of competition is one of those reasons. A playoff system would mimic what we have going on in the SEC, but on crack. The West has four good teams with 5 losses among them, and the East has 1 decent team, and one mediocre team (with 6 losses between them) followed by complete shite.
But SC has a better chance of making the Sugar Bowl than LSU.

Isn't a Plus One essentially a 4 team playoff?

well it keeps the current bowl structure intact.

partly...but also they don't want the NCAA running college football which is why they stay away from a playoff. Right now conferences and alliances (ie the BCS) negotiate television contracts on their own.

I think a good first step might be to take a good look at the AQ conferences and if some of those teams really deserve to get a BCS bowl just because they won their respective conference (I'm looking at you Big East). It's very possible to have a Pitt team win the Big East and not even be ranked in the top 25. That's pathetic. Should only get an automatic bid if you win your conference and are ranked in at least the top 20, preferably in the top 15.

sure you can say that but:
AU vs TCU in Sugar
Oregon vs LSU in Rose
winner vs winner in BCS champ game
just an example. not a playoff to me but might be to you. 8 or 16 is a playoff, 4 is a final four JMO

there was some talk a while back about a conditional plus 1...i.e. if the 3rd place team was within a certain point total of the 1st place team it would trigger the 4 team system. However, if it was like last year, there was really no point to having anything besides Bama vs. TX

Any idea when they post it online?

Let there be a Boise St. vs TCU MNC game this season with a 1 loss Auburn and 1 loss LSU getting left out, and you will likely see the SEC lead the charge for a playoff.
I am just about ready to see 4, 16 to 20 team super conferences have a 4 team playoff.
